Book excerpt: Pensées Blaise Pascal - From the notes for Pascal's contemplated "Apology for the Christian Religion" the Port-Royalists compiled and edited the book known as his "Pensées" or "Thoughts." The early texts were much tampered with, and the material has been frequently rearranged; but now at last it is possible to read these fragmentary jottings as they came from the hand of their author. In spite of their incompleteness and frequent incoherence, the "Thoughts" have long held a high place among the great religious classics. Much of the theological argument implied in these utterances has little appeal to the modern mind, but the acuteness of the observation of human life, the subtlety of the reasoning, the combination of precision and fervid imagination in the expression, make this a book to which the discerning mind can return again and again for insight and inspiration.

Book excerpt: "Men despise religion. They hate it and are afraid it may be true," declared Pascal in his Penseés. "The cure for this," he explained, "is first to show that religion is not contrary to reason, but worthy of reverence and respect. Next make it attractive, make good men wish it were true, and then show that it is." Motivated by the 17th-century view of the supremacy of human reason, Pascal (1623–1662) intended to write an ambitious apologia for Christianity, in which he argued the inability of reason to address metaphysical problems. While Pascal's untimely death prevented his completion of the work, these fragments published posthumously in 1670 as Penseés remain a vital part of religious and philosophical literature. Introduction by T. S. Eliot.

In Windhoek she develops friendships with a group of strong, independent women, who have also come from other countries, and are engaged in different ways to overcome the divisions of the past. Over coffee, drinks and food, they support each other through times of happiness and sadness, through juggling careers and family, and through illness and death. Set against the backdrop of the historical, political and social development of newly independent Namibia, Undisciplined Heart tells the story of Janeís love for her family, friends and her adopted country, in a gentle and honest way that reflects the joys and tragedies of life

Book excerpt: In 1961 at Garabandal, at the height of power of the Soviet Union, Mary told Conchita and the other three girls that “When Communism comes back, these things [marking the end of time] would begin.” The girls asked: “Come back? Where is it going?” Now we’ve seen Communism go, overcome by Pope St. John Paul II and other leaders, and now we’re seeing it come back. At Fatima, Mary said that if the Holy Father in union with the bishops of the world consecrated the world to her Immaculate Heart, “An era of peace would be granted to mankind.” Pope St. John Paul II made this consecration in 1984. But how long is an era of peace? In the Psalms a man’s life is 70 or 80 years, an average of 75. The Soviet Union lasted for 75 years (1917-1991). Perhaps the Chinese CCP will last for 75 years, having begun in 1949. If the era of peace is 75 years long, and if it began with the end of World War II in 1945, the era of peace ended in 2020. Mary also said that “in the end [her] Immaculate Heart would triumph.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the 47th Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense (Leuven, 1998). The general theme of the meeting was the unity of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. Main papers on this topic were read by R.L. Brawley, J. Delobel, A. Denaux, J.A. Fitzmeyer, F.W. Horn, J. Kremer, A. Lindemann, O. Mainville, D. Marguerat, F. Neirynck, W. Radl, M. Rese, J. Taylor, C.M. Tuckett, and J. Verheyden. While a large majority of scholars agree that Luke intended his work to cover both the past and the continuing history of Jesus (Gospel and Acts), the essays also illustrate the complexities of this view on the unity of Luke-Acts when it comes to interpret the various aspects of Lukan theology, christology, pneumatology, and ecclesiology, the expansion of the Church in light of its Jewish origins, the genre of Luke-Acts, and the literary and stylistic means Luke used to make his work a unity. In total the volume includes some 40 papers, of which 24 are offered papers: L. Alexander, H. Baarlink, M. Bachmann, D. Bechard, T.L. Brodie, G.P. Carras, A. del Agua, C. Focant, G. Geiger, B.J. Koet, V. Koperski, D.P. Moessner, G. Oegema, J. Pichler, E. Plumacher, A. Puig i Tarrech, U. Schmid, B. Schwank, N. Taylor, P.J. Tomson, S. Van den Eynde, S. Walton, G. Wasserberg, F. Wilk. This collection is an invaluable contribution to current discussions in Lukan study and to a nuanced understanding of the relationship between Luke's two volumes.

Mankind emerges from Pascal's analysis as a wretched and desolate creature within an impersonal universe, but who can be transformed through faith in God's grace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book brings together several case studies, dealing with relevant facets of the work of some of philosophy’s all-time greats. The subject-matter topic being addressed differs significantly, but in each case there is an attempt to apply mathematical methods and perspectives to the solution of a key philosophical issue in a way that throws instructive light upon it. On this basis it emerges that the question “Are mathematical methods useful in philosophy?” finds a suggestive response in the fact that over two millennia key figures in the history of the subject have indeed thought so. And they have substantiated this view not so much by abstract argumentation on the basis of general principles, but by making this point through actual practice.

Book excerpt: An expanded edition of the classic exploration of the English esoteric musical underground—with the first biography of Coil, Current 93, and Nurse With Wound. This newly expanded edition of England's Hidden Reverse, the classic exploration of the English esoteric musical underground that includes the first, and only, biographies of Coil, Current 93, and Nurse With Wound, is based on exclusive interviews and unprecedented access to all three bands’ personal archives. Together, these genre-defying bands and their circles represent the English underground in all its cultural, artistic, and sexual variety. Over four decades, the three intertwined groups have maintained a symbiotic, yet uneasy, relationship with the mainstream of popular culture, even as their music, beliefs, and practices have repelled them from it. Theirs was a clandestine scene whose work accents the many occulted peculiarities of Englishness that flow through generations of outsiders, channeling personalities as diverse as Aleister Crowley, Arthur Machen, Joe Orton, Shirley Collins, Björk, and Marc Almond. The story of this Hidden Reverse has, necessarily, remained a secret. Until now. This new volume contains almost 100 pages of extra material culled from Furfur, a collection of interviews with musicians and artists whose careers intersected with the bands’, initially published alongside Strange Attractor's first limited edition of the book.

Book excerpt: "The most profound and unexhausted books will probably always have something of the aphoristic and sudden character of Pascal's Pensées. The driving forces and valuations are long under the surface; what emerges is effect." Nietzsche, The Will to Power, Part II, 1884 In Reflections (Pensées), Pascal critiques what Carl Jung called "pure Cartesian Rationalism"; rational skepticism as the basis of all knowledge and the inadequacies of secular philosophy. Pascal, who was in lifelong discussions with his contemporary Descartes, rejects the idea that human reason alone can achieve certainty, especially when it comes to metaphysical and theological questions. Instead, he insists that true knowledge of God and the self comes through divine revelation and faith. Pascal's skepticism is directed at the assumption that reason can answer life's most profound questions, making Pensées both a defense of Jansenism and a critique of the nascent Enlightenment rationalism, which relied on a simplistic interpretation of Descartes. After his death, the first edition was organized by his friends Arnauld and Nicole, and although they were compelled to treat the text with great reverence and fear the Jesuits, who could not tolerate the attack of the Provinciales, induced them to make some flattening corrections that were not offensive. This collection was first published in 1678. A century later, when Voltaire and the encyclopedists ruled France, the latter published the Pensées according to a skillful arrangement by Condorcet and accompanied them with frivolous annotations. This edition here contains Voltaire's annotations in-line with the rest of the text originally published in Les Extraits des Pensées de Pascal. The text is organized topically according to Henreich Hesse’s 1844 version. Here, we render his most important work Pensées as “Reflections”, not "Thoughts" as it often has been translated into English. This is more thematic, highlighting the introspective nature of the text. "Thoughts" does not do justice to the meditative nature of the text, and "Meditations" reminds one of that Stoic philosopher a bit too much. The aim here is to be accurate and true to the text but always in relationship to the philosophical milieu of the modern reader. First published posthumously in 1670, the Pensées, though an unfinished work, stands as one of the most influential and profound contributions to both Christian apologetics and philosophy. The central theme of the Pensées is the tension between faith and reason. Pascal, a devout Jansenist, argued that while reason has its place in human life, it is insufficient to grasp ultimate truths about existence, God, and salvation. He portrays man as caught between two extremes: greatness and wretchedness. Our greatness lies in our ability to think, but our wretchedness stems from our separation from God through sin. This dual nature leads people to distraction and diversion as they try to avoid confronting their existential despair. A new 2024 translation of Pascal's most influential publication Pensées contains a new Afterword by the translator on Pascal's personal relationship with Descartes and his intellectual objections to the new Cartesian rationality which fundamentally changed the course of both Science and Philosophy, a short biography on Pascal's life and impact. This is followed by a timeline of his life and relationships, an index of his core Philosophic terminology, a chronological list and summary of all of his published and posthumous works, and the text of Pascal's Memorial, a poetic, fragmented account of his divine vision in 1654. This is volume 7 of the 7-part Complete Works of Pascal by Livraria Press. This volume covers Pascal’s groundbreaking contributions to mathematics, science, and engineering, as well as his Scientific-Philosophical commentary on the Enlightenment's Scientific progress.
