Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Schengen Convention has been in force since March 1995, no book has to date attempted an interpretation of the three authentic versions of the Convention in the light of a comparative study of applicable norms in the five original Schengen countries. This book is the result of a five-year study of the law applicable to the police in five countries (Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxembourg, France and Germany) and the possible impact of the differences on the application of the Schengen Convention. Moreover, the European Convention on Human Rights is used as a standard minimum for the interpretation. This book is an important tool for all practitioners in the field of cross-border criminal procedure law.
Book Synopsis Lenses and Waves by : Fokko Jan Dijksterhuis
Download or read book Lenses and Waves written by Fokko Jan Dijksterhuis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-20 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1690, Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695) published Traité de la Lumière, containing his renowned wave theory of light. It is considered a landmark in seventeenth-century science, for the way Huygens mathematized the corpuscular nature of light and his probabilistic conception of natural knowledge. This book discusses the development of Huygens' wave theory, reconstructing the winding road that eventually led to Traité de la Lumière. For the first time, the full range of manuscript sources is taken into account. In addition, the development of Huygens' thinking on the nature of light is put in the context of his optics as a whole, which was dominated by his lifelong pursuit of theoretical and practical dioptrics. In so doing, this book offers the first account of the development of Huygens' mathematical analysis of lenses and telescopes and its significance for the origin of the wave theory of light. As Huygens applied his mathematical proficiency to practical issues pertaining to telescopes – including trying to design a perfect telescope by means of mathematical theory – his dioptrics is significant for our understanding of seventeenth-century relations between theory and practice. With this full account of Huygens' optics, this book sheds new light on the history of seventeenth-century optics and the rise of the new mathematical sciences, as well as Huygens' oeuvre as a whole. Students of the history of optics, of early mathematical physics, and the Scientific Revolution, will find this book enlightening.
Book Synopsis Invisible Bicycle by : Tiina Mannisto-Funk
Download or read book Invisible Bicycle written by Tiina Mannisto-Funk and published by Technology and Change in Histo. This book was released on 2018 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Invisible Bicyclebrings together different insights into the social, cultural and economic history of the bicycle and cycling in historical eras of ubiquitous bicycle use that have remained relatively invisible in bicycle history. It revisits the typical timeline of cycling's decline in the 1950s and 1960s and the renaissance beginning in the 1970s by bringing forth the large national and local variations, varying uses and images of the bicycle, and different bicycle cultures as well as their historical background and motivations. To understand the role, possibilities and challenges of the bicycle today, it is necessary to know the history that has formed them. Therefore The Invisible Bicycleis recommended also to present-day practitioners and planners of bicycle mobility.Contributors are: Peter Cox, Martin Emanuel, Tiina Männistö-Funk, Timo Myllyntaus, Nicholas Oddy, Harry Oosterhuis, William Steele, Manuel Stoffers, Sue-Yen Tjong Tjin Tai, Frank Veraart.

Book Synopsis Stalking in the Netherlands by : Suzan van der Aa
Download or read book Stalking in the Netherlands written by Suzan van der Aa and published by Maklu. This book was released on 2010 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing love letters, making phone calls, and sending gifts, these are all seemingly innocuous behaviours. This changes when the love expressed in the letters remains unrequited, when the phone calls amount to hundreds a night, or when the gifts consist of bullets and funeral wreaths. When attempts to contact another person happen with a certain nature and frequency, the behaviour can be qualified as stalking and it can have a detrimental impact on the life of the person subjected to the unwanted attention. In this book an account is given of the nature and prevalence of the problem of stalking in the Netherlands, of the effectiveness and the (dis)advantages of resorting to the police, and of the pros and cons of two alternative anti-stalking measures: hiring the services of a private investigation and protection agency and obtaining a civil restraining order.

Book Synopsis Trading Paintings and Painters' Materials by : Anne Haack Christensen
Download or read book Trading Paintings and Painters' Materials written by Anne Haack Christensen and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-08 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume were presented at the CATS international technical art history conference Trading Paintings and Painters' Materials 1550-1800 which explored international markets for paintings and artists' materials in the early modern period and their implications for artistic production. Questions central to these papers include: did preferences exist for artists' materials and paintings from specific geographical areas in particular places and if so why? How did the import of painting materials and artworks impact local production, connoisseurship and art theory? In what conditions were these artists' materials and finished artworks produced and traded in early modern Europe and beyond? The lavishly illustrated contributions in this volume deal with the above questions and shed light on different trades, products, countries and timeframes by combining a large variety of methods and sources, including visual analyses, written sources, pigment analyses and archaeological excavations. This fourth CATS Proceedings will be of interest to scholars and students, museum professionals, curators, conservators, art historians and conservation scientists.
