Book excerpt: A distributed feedback laser (DFB) is a type of semiconductor laser where the cavity is periodically structured as a diffraction grating. This allows the same grating region to act as a resonator, out-coupler and the gain region simultaneously. While conventional DFB lasers emit light along its edges, by modifying the grating structure, it is possible to make the output appear from the top surface. This is known as the surface-emitting DFB laser. This thesis will discuss the case in which a two-dimensional grating (which consists of a 2D grid of holes or pillars) etched into the top cladding surface of the waveguide. The thesis consists of four main parts. For the first part, we give the background principles and the coupled wave equations with radiation modes. In the second part, we derive the equations for a waveguide that utilizes a grating strip for guidance. The effective index of this guide is then used in the 2D DFB crossed grating structure. The third part begins with calculations of a particular GaAs:GaAlAs waveguide geometry with a grating. We present the fundamental resonant modes by utilizing the numerical shooting method. Then, the matrix solution method is applied in the calculation of the higher order guided and radiation modes. In the last part, we solve the transcendental equations for the eigenvalues to get the threshold gain and near field radiation pattern from the DFB surface.

Book excerpt: Since the first edition of this book was published in 1997, the photonics landscape has evolved considerably and so has the role of distributed feedback (DFB) laser diodes. Although tunable laser diodes continue to be introduced in advanced optical communication systems, DFB laser diodes are still widely applied in many deployed systems. This also includes wavelength tunable DFB laser diodes and DFB laser diode arrays, usually integrated with intensity or phase modulators and semiconductor optical amplifiers. This valuable resource gives professionals a comprehensive description of the different effects that determine the behavior of a DFB laser diode. Special attention is given to two new chapters on wavelength tunable DFB laser diodes and bistable and unstable DFB laser diodes. Among many other updates throughout the reference, semi-conductor and electromagnetic professionals are also provided two new appendices. This book fully covers the underlying theory, commercial applications, necessary design criteria, and future direction of this technology.

Book excerpt: Although semiconductor-diode lasers are the most compact, highest gain and most efficient laser sources, difficulties remain in developing structures that will produce high-quality, diffraction-limited output beams. Indeed, only a few designs have emerged with the potential for producing high-power, high-brightness monolithic sources. This book presents and analyzes the results of work performed over the past two decades in the development of such diode-laser arrays.

Book excerpt: Advances in optical fibre based communications systems have played a crucial role in the development of the information highway. By offering a single mode oscillation and narrow spectral output, distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor laser diodes offer excellent optical light sources as well as optical filters for fibre based communications and dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems. This comprehensive text focuses on the basic working principles of DFB laser diodes and optical filters and details the development of a new technique for enhanced system performance. Considers the optical waveguiding characteristics and properties of semiconductor materials and the physics of DFB semiconductor lasers. Presents a powerful modelling technique based on the transfer matrix method which can be used to improve the design of laser diodes, optical fibres and amplifiers. Examines the effect of the various corrugation shapes on the coupling coefficients and lasing characteristics of DFB laser diodes. Technical advice to improve immunity against the spatial hole burning effect. Extensive referencing throughout and a comprehensive glossary of symbols and abbreviations. Suitable for both introductory and advanced levels This is an indispensable textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate students of electrical and electronic engineering and physics as it consolidates their knowledge in this rapidly growing field. As a technical guide for the structural design of DFB laser diodes and optical filters, the book will serve as an invaluable reference for researchers in opto-electronics, and semi conductor device physics.

Book excerpt: In many applications, radio frequency (RF) signals need to be transmitted and processed without being digitalized. Optical fiber provides a transmission medium in which RF modulated optical carriers can be transmitted and distributed with very low loss, making it more efficient and less costly than conventional electronic systems. This volume presents a review of RF photonic components, transmission systems, and signal processing examples in optical fibers from leading academic, government, and industry scientists working in this field. It also introduces the reader to various related technologies such as direct modulation of laser sources, external modulation techniques, and detectors. The text is aimed at engineers and scientists engaged in the research and development of optical fibers and analog RF applications. With an emphasis on design, performance and practical application, this book will be of particular interest to those developing systems based on this technology.

Book excerpt: In the past 30 years, organic conjugated molecules have received a lot of attention in research because of their unique combination of active properties typical of semiconductors and the technological appeal typical of plastic materials. Among the different applications proposed for organic materials, organic lasers are quickly approaching the performance required in real devices, while research on novel active materials is still ongoing. The book covers the basic aspects of the measurement techniques of optical gain and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in organic films as well as the photophysics of organic materials that can be understood using ASE measurements. It reviews the recent advances in the development of new active materials for organic lasers as well as the actual state of the art of scattering-assisted random lasers and of strongly coupled organic microcavities, both promising interesting developments in the near future. Finally, it gives a detailed review of the state of the art of the organic lasers actually closest to real applications, namely external cavity lasers and distributed feedback lasers. The book is unique that it covers basic aspects, technological aspects, and systems, which are still a subject of basic science research.
