Book excerpt: "24 Frames into the Future: Scalzi on Science Fiction Film is the 2012 Boskone Book by Guest of Honor John Scalzi. John Scalzi's first job was not actually writing a science fiction novel; rather, he was a film critic for the Fresno Bee. Only years later did he write Old Man's War, his critically acclaimed first novel. In this book, collecting many of his essays on Science Fiction films, you can read Scalzi's thoughts on movies, how they're produced, and how storytelling differs between movie and print. You'll get to read his prognostications about the Oscars and Hugos, and what he felt about how the awards actually turned out not to mention why "show business" is not "show art". Scalzi also has a lot to say about that rarified universe outside SF, and he also puts into perspective the way it has both taken from SF's culture and fashioned it"--Publisher.

Book excerpt: Voice & Vision is a comprehensive manual for the independent filmmakers and film students who want a solid grounding in the tools, techniques, and processes of narrative film in order to achieve their artistic vision. This book includes essential and detailed information on relevant film and digital video tools, a thorough overview of the filmmaking stages, and the aesthetic considerations for telling a visual story. The ultimate goal of this book is to help you develop your creative voice while acquiring the solid practical skills and confidence to use it. Unlike many books that privilege raw technical information or the line-producing aspects of production, Voice & Vision places creativity, visual expression, and cinematic ideas front and center. After all, every practical decision a filmmaker makes, like choosing a location, an actor, a film stock, a focal length, a lighting set-up, an edit point, or a sound effect is also an expressive one and should serve the filmmaker's vision. Every decision, from the largest conceptual choices to the smallest practical solutions, has a profound impact on what appears on the screen and how it moves an audience. "In Practice sidebars throughout Voice & Vision connect conceptual, aesthetic and technical issues to their application in the real world. Some provide a brief analysis of a scene or technique from easily rentable films which illustrate how a specific technology or process is used to support a conceptual, narrative, or aesthetic choice. Others recount common production challenges encountered on real student and professional shoots which will inspire you to be innovative and resourceful when you are solving your own filmmaking challenges.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is not a dictionary - and nor is it an encyclopedia. It is a reference and compendium of useful information about the converging worlds of computers, communications, telecommunications and broadcasting. You could refer to it as a guide for the Information Super Highway, but this would be pretentious. It aims to cover most of the more important terms and concepts in the developing discipline of Informatics - which, in my definition, includes the major converging technologies, and the associated social and cultural issues. Unlike a dictionary, this handbook makes no attempt to be 'prescriptive' in its definitions. Many of the words we use today in computing and communications only vaguely reflect their originations. And with such rapid change, older terms are often taken, twisted, inverted, and mangled, to the point where any attempt by me to lay down laws of meaning, would be meaningless. The information here is 'descriptive' - I am concerned with usage only. This book therefore contains keywords and explanations which have been culled from the current literature - from technical magazines, newspapers, the Internet, forums, etc. This is the living language as it is being used today - not a historical artifact of 1950s computer science.

It explains vital concepts, including digitization, compression, digital compositing, nonlinear editing, and on-set digital production and relates traditional film production and editing processes to those of digital techniques. Various filmmakers discuss their use of digital techniques to enhance the creative process in the "Industry Viewpoints" sections in each chapter .

Book excerpt: An accessible and exciting new textbook that provides students with an in-depth historical and conceptual understanding of the nature and function of media in society. Stacey O. Irwin contextualizes media objects and experiences – including cinema, TV, phones, gaming, radio and podcasting, journalism, publishing, advertising, and more – into three descriptive sections: screens, sounds, and synergies. The text examines how technology is enfolded into the cultural process of contemporary media experience, exploring topics such as social media, augmented reality and other trends from the metaverse. It also reflects on the impact of legacy media and highlights instrumental moments in media history along the way. By examining media history from the perspective of future decision-making, this textbook explores how media technologies have a positive and negative sociocultural impact. This provides students with a more accessible entry point to the topic, and readers are left with a well-rounded understanding of media and the interplay between media, culture, technology, and society. Each chapter concludes with things to consider and additional takeaways to enhance student learning. This is an essential text for students taking classes such as Introduction to Mass Media, Survey of Media, Media History, Media and Society, and Media Culture.

Book excerpt: The book Intelligent Systems and Applications - Proceedings of the 2020 Intelligent Systems Conference is a remarkable collection of chapters covering a wider range of topics in areas of intelligent systems and artificial intelligence and their applications to the real world. The Conference attracted a total of 545 submissions from many academic pioneering researchers, scientists, industrial engineers, students from all around the world. These submissions underwent a double-blind peer review process. Of those 545 submissions, 177 submissions have been selected to be included in these proceedings. As intelligent systems continue to replace and sometimes outperform human intelligence in decision-making processes, they have enabled a larger number of problems to be tackled more effectively. This branching out of computational intelligence in several directions and use of intelligent systems in everyday applications have created the need for such an international conference which serves as a venue to report on up-to-the-minute innovations and developments. This book collects both theory and application based chapters on all aspects of artificial intelligence, from classical to intelligent scope. We hope that readers find the volume interesting and valuable; it provides the state of the art intelligent methods and techniques for solving real world problems along with a vision of the future research.

This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several years ago when I began consulting full time, I quickly discovered that despite three advanced academic degrees my practical industrial experience had some significant gaps. It thus was necessary initially to spend considerable (nonbillable) time collecting and organizing a great deal of essential information on the various aspects of modern data communica tions. The task was made more difficult by the highly interdisciplinary nature of the field, with the required information scattered throughout the vast international literature of telecommunications, computers, electrical engineering, military systems, mathematics, operations research, optimiza tion, speech processing, and the murky world oflegal and regulatory policy. Although there were a number of fine books and periodicals in each of these specialized disciplines, I was unable to find a single comprehensive text that covered the entire field at even a modestly attractive technical and mathematical level. After going to the trouble of organizing all this diverse material for my clients and students, it seemed rather natural to put it into book form and thus share it with those professionals working with computer data communi cations who need a comprehensive coverage of the subject at a level immediately applicable to their work and yet easily accessible for self-study. The project was facilitated by an agreeable publisher and an incredibly understanding and cooperative family, and Practical Computer Data Com munications is the result.
