Book Synopsis Impressionists and Politics by : Philip Nord
Download or read book Impressionists and Politics written by Philip Nord and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impressionists and Politics is an accessible introduction to the current debates about Impressionism. Was the artistic movement really radical and innovative? Is the term "Impressionism" itself an adequate characterization of the movement of painters and critics that took the mid-nineteenth century Paris art world by storm? By providing an historical background and context, the book places the Impressionists' roots in wider social and economic transformations and explains its militancy, both aesthetic and political. Impressionists and Politics is a concise history of the movement, from its youthful inception in the 1860s, through to its final years of recognition and then crisis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the relationship between Cecil Rhodes and the Cape Afrikaners fills many gaps in his political biography. Previous biographers have rarely consulted the abundant Cape Afrikaner sources that this book refers to and which contribute to a better understanding of Rhodes' political career. Rhodes, who appeared on the political scene of the Cape Colony in the 1880s, played an important role in the shaping of the political outlook of the Cape Afrikaners during the last two decades of the century.
Book Synopsis Voice of the Vanishing Minority by : Robert Hill
Download or read book Voice of the Vanishing Minority written by Robert Hill and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1999-04-20 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely regarded as the authentic voice of English-speaking farmers in Quebec, Robert Sellar, editor of the Huntingdon Gleaner, was the most-quoted rural newspaperman in Canada. Voice of the Vanishing Minority recounts Sellar's crusade against the tide of Frenchification that would displace English-speaking people from the townships they had pioneered. As a result of his outspokenness Sellar endured character assassination, physical violence, legal harassment, arson, clerical condemnation, disappointment, and the apathy of the dwindling communities he was defending. His provocative beliefs about Quebec's first "English exodus" - shared by the grass roots but dismissed by politically correct politicians, journalists, and academics as Anglo-Protestant bigotry - cut to the core of the unity crisis already developing in Canada. Book Synopsis The Origins of the French Nationalist Movement, 1886-1914 by : Robert Lynn Fuller
Download or read book The Origins of the French Nationalist Movement, 1886-1914 written by Robert Lynn Fuller and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This narrative history explores the emergence of one of the most influential Nationalist movements of modern Europe. It explains how and why the movement united the far right with the far left in a militant campaign to wrest control of France from the moderate republicans who were attempting to stabilize the country after a century of political volatility. The agitation groups, propaganda machines, street-fighting gangs, and political hustlers, who made up the Nationalists, all campaigned for one end: to overthrow the Third Republic. The eruption of the Dreyfus Affair (1894-1899) provided the Nationalists with a convenient target for their assaults: the "Dreyfusard" defenders of a wrongly convicted Jewish army captain, Alfred Dreyfus. This work, based on original archival research in France, argues that the Nationalists posed a real and dangerous threat that dissipated only when their goals were adopted by more moderate competing groups.

Download or read book Adolph Sutro written by William R. Huber and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-04-13 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolph Sutro was forever seeking challenges. Emigrating from Prussia to the U.S. at age 20, the California gold rush lured him west. At the Comstock Lode in Nevada, he conceived an idea for a tunnel to drain the hot water that made the mines perilous and inefficient. But he would have to overcome both physical obstacles and powerful opposition by the Bank of California to realize his vision. Back in San Francisco, Sutro bought one twelfth of the city, including the famous Cliff House perched over the Pacific Ocean. When it burned to cinders on Christmas Day, 1894, he built a massive, eight-story Victorian replacement. He used his expertise in tunneling and water solutions to create the world's largest enclosed swimming structure, the Sutro Baths--six glass-covered heated saltwater pools with capacity of 1,000 swimmers. Other challenges followed but Sutro was not invincible. After a two-year term as mayor of San Francisco, he succumbed to debilitating strokes which left him senile. His death in 1898 started disputes among his heirs--six children by his wife and two by his mistress--that lasted more than a decade.
