Book excerpt: After the 2005 publication of his portfolio of etchings, The Leading of Causes of Death in America, Sandow Birk began a monumental print project inspired by a series of etchings called The Miseries and Disasters of War by Jacques Callot, printed in 1633. The project consists of 15 large- scale woodcut prints, each measuring 48 x 96 inches. Printed in collaboration with Master Printer Paul Mullowney, and assisted by HuiPress printer Casey Neumann, and Rhode Island School of Design interns Samuel Carr-Prindle and Nichol Markowitz, the images follow the course of the Iraq war. This landscape- styled book reproduces this project, along with selected paintings, and commentaries by other contributors on Birk's work and the artistic depiction of war and its atrocities.

Book excerpt: An all-new collection of paintings and sculpture by art legend Robert Williams. First exhibited at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery in early 2015, the work in this oversized, hardcover exhibition catalog is accompanied by insightful essays by the artist. --- "The current international capitol of artistic sophistication is New York City. Ever since the end of the Second World War, every small city in the United States that has an art community has looked to New York for cultural parenting. However, an interesting anomaly has developed over the years. "Sophistication," like any other folkway, travels slowly with misinterpretations happening along the way. By the time high culture reached the West Coast it had traded its Brooks Brothers suit for cut-offs, a Hawaiian shirt, and flip-flops. Art on the West Coast, as much as it tries to maintain blue blood affectations shows mutations. It just doesn't have the aloof adroit coldness the Eastern Seaboard art society seems to portray." - Robert Williams, from his introduction to Slang Aesthetics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What did the "Negro problem," as it was called at the turn of the twentieth century, look like? Autumn Womack's study examines efforts to visualize Black social life through new technologies and disciplines-from photography and film to statistics-in the decades between 1880 and 1930. Womack describes nothing less than a "racial data revolution," one in which social scientists, reformers, and theorists rendered Black life an inanimate object of inquiry. At the very same time, Black cultural producers staged their own kind of revolution, undisciplining racial data in ways that challenged normative visual regimes and capturing the dynamism of Black social life. Womack focuses on figures like W.E.B DuBois, Kelly Miller, Sutton Griggs, and Zora Neale Hurston, as well as lesser-known editors, social reformers, and performers. She shows how they harnessed media as diverse as the social survey, the novel, the stage, and early motion pictures to reform visual practices and recalibrate the relationship between data and black life"--

Download or read book Juan Logan; What Do You See? written by Curator Love and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aesthetically seductive, yet socio politically charged; confrontational yet inviting, captivating and provocative are the artworks by Juan Logan. In a recent art journey, I came across his body of work at Logan Studios and became quickly intoxicated. Unlike encountering them in a museum space, an institution or a gallery; here I found myself entranced in a different type of aesthetic journey; one that would lead me to experience an understanding which I had not encountered before. Juan Logan's body of work is fascinating; enchanting and challenging all at once, unapologetic and strong with hints of sarcasm and irony that serve to challenge the viewer into engaging with the heavy issues he addresses with every piece he produces.
