Book excerpt: The European Committee of the Regions (the CoR) is a Political Assembly composed of 658 elected representatives of Local and Regional Authorities (LRAs) (329 Members and 329 Alternates), representing one million EU politicians elected at local and regional level. The Committee contributes to the EU policy shaping and decision-making process from the viewpoint of the LRAs. At the same time, the Committee's Members contribute to make the Union more effective and closer to the citizens by implementing EU law and communicating on the Union's policies on the ground. LRA are responsible for one third of public spending and two thirds of public investment hold competencies in key areas such as education, economic development and cohesion, environment, social protection, health and services of general interest in many Member States. Furthermore, the LRAs are also implementing about 70% of European legislation and programmes. Cooperation between the local, regional, national and European levels is the best response to common challenges. A European Union that takes into account local and regional needs and concerns, increases the legitimacy of its legislation, improves ownership and achieves greater added-value and effectiveness on the ground for the benefit of citizens. To this end, the CoR works closely with the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, as well as with the various tiers of government in the Member States. The present CoR Annual Operational Working Plan for 2023 is marked by the implementation of the political priorities that were adopted by the CoR for its 2020-2025 term of office. These priorities are streamlined into the work of all the CoR's bodies and guide its outreach and communication activities.

Book Synopsis Forest Landscape Management Plan for the BidiBidi Refugee Settlement, Yumbe District, Uganda: 2023–2028 by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Forest Landscape Management Plan for the BidiBidi Refugee Settlement, Yumbe District, Uganda: 2023–2028 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-07-17 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Forest Landscape Management Plan for the Bidibidi Refugee Settelemnt, Yumbe District, Uganda: 2023–2028, aims at providing practical guidelines to alleviate pressure on the environment and natural resources, ensure sustainable access to biomass for cooking, and contribute to building the resilience of both refugee and host communities. The influx of refugees in Uganda has often added to existing pressure on the environment, resulting in reduced access to woodfuel for cooking and competition with host communities over the use of limited natural resources.A planned approach for the management of natural resources in displacement situations, in both the short and the long term, is crucial to minimize the environmental impact and to increase resilience of refugee and host communities to climate and other shocks. It is also a fundamental step to ensure sustainable livelihood opportunities through innovative and resilient forest value chains, including market access and social protection, while at the same time promoting a safer and more efficient use of natural resources, such as the use of sustainably produced woodfuel for cooking and heating, and access to alternative energy sources.

And yet, not only are ending poverty and reducing inequalities at the core of their mandates, both are also essential to meeting their broader ambitions in terms of sustainable development worldwide. How can international development co-operation policy and finance help? Bringing together the latest evidence, data and insights from governments, academia, international organisations and civil society, the OECD Development Co-operation Report 2024 provides policy makers with concrete ways of delivering on their commitments to improve the lives of billions while fostering green, just transitions around the world.

Book Synopsis Health Systems Recovery in the Context of COVID-19 and Protracted Conflict by : Zsuzsanna Jakab
Download or read book Health Systems Recovery in the Context of COVID-19 and Protracted Conflict written by Zsuzsanna Jakab and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-07-10 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented disruption worldwide highlighting once again the interdependency of health and socioeconomic development, and the global lack of health systems resilience. Two years into the pandemic, most countries report sustained disruptions across service delivery platforms and health areas with a profound impact on health outcomes. The impact of these disruptions is magnified within marginalized communities and in countries experiencing protracted conflict. There is an urgent need to focus on recovery through investment in the essential public health functions (EPHFs) and the foundations of health systems with a focus on primary health care, and whole-of-government and -society engagement. The aim of this Research Topic is to gather, transfer and promote operationalization of key experiences from COVID-19 to inform global and country level recovery that better promote health; guide policy direction towards building health systems resilience; and thereby ensure economic and social prosperity. Experience with COVID-19 has demonstrated that traditional approaches to health system strengthening have failed to achieve the complementary goals of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and health security with the divide between the most vulnerable and well-off only widening. Much of what had been learned from previous experiences such as Ebola in West Africa has not been widely applied. This has left health and economic systems vulnerable to 21 st century public health challenges, ranging from conflict and natural disasters to aging demographics and rising rates of non-communicable and communicable diseases and antimicrobial resistance. These challenges require intentional focus and investment as well as whole-of-government and -society engagement with health to build health system resilience. Greater action is needed to prevent the devastating effects of war and conflict on the health of the most vulnerable. This Research Topic will convene the knowledge and practices of leaders in public health, health systems, and humanitarian and development sectors. This is to ensure lessons from COVID-19 inform the recovery agenda and promote sustainable health and socioeconomic recovery for all. Lest we forget and find ourselves again unprepared and vulnerable in the face of an even greater threat.
