Book excerpt: Enhancing the integration of renewable power generation from wind and solar into the traditional power network requires the mitigation of the vulnerabilities affecting the grid as a result of the intermittent nature of these resources. Variability and ramp events in power output are the key challenges to the system operators due to their impact on system balancing, reserves management, scheduling, and commitment of generation units. This book presents development of energy management system for renewable power generation (EMSRPG) tool that aims to achieve power-dispatching strategies based on forecasting renewable energy resources outputs to guarantee optimal dispatch of hybrid wind-solar photovoltaic power systems (HWSPS). The key selling points of the book include the following: Renewable energy management in modern and future smart power systems Energy management systems Modeling and simulations using a real-time digital simulator (RTDS) High penetration level of renewable energy sources Case studies based on Oman’s power systems and other power grids This book discusses the challenges of integrating renewable resources, including low inertia systems, hosting capacity limitations of existing power systems, and weak grids. It further examines the detailed topologies, operation principles, recent developments in control techniques, and stability of power systems with a large scale of renewables. Finally, it presents case studies of recent projects from around the world where dispatchable power plant techniques are used to enhance power system operation.

Book excerpt: SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF ELECTRONIC WASTE Written and edited by a group of industry professionals, this new volume provides cutting-edge insights into how the sustainability of managing electronic waste can be achieved, for engineers, scientists, and students. As a result of the rapid advancement of technology and the globalization of the economy, waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) management has become increasingly important. Manufacturers are especially concerned about the proper disposal of their waste, and researchers need to identify the obstacles and enablers that stand in the way of implementing a long-term WEEE management system in order to develop a long-term WEEE management system. Further, the literature did not adequately capture the perspectives of multiple stakeholders while also identifying the enablers required for the development of sustainable WEEE management policies, which was particularly important in developing countries. This volume fills a gap in the literature by considering the perspectives of multiple stakeholders to identify enablers of sustainable WEEE management in emerging economies which was previously unexplored. This book focuses on the most recent technological advancements for the twenty-first century, emphasizing the synergies that exist between computer science, bioinformatics, and other sciences. The research and development of artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain technologies, quantum computing with cryptography, nanotechnology, sensors based on biotechnology, Internet of Things devices, nature-inspired algorithms, computer vision techniques, computational biology, and other topics are covered in this book, along with their applications in the fields of science, engineering, physical science, and economics. Modern environmental techniques are among the most innovative innovations emerging as a result of the insatiable demand for health standards in the modern world.

Book excerpt: Nowadays, the use of power converter technology has expanded into a wide range of low-, medium-, and high-power applications due to the technology’s capability to efficiently manage electrical energy. In this regard, the high penetration of modern microprocessors capable of implementing high-performance nonlinear digital controllers and the recent advances in the development of high-speed switching power electronic devices, where on-state loss and consequently switching loss of power semiconductors are significantly decreased, have contributed to increased efficiency of the new power converters. As a result, the size of power converters becomes small and the power converters with less heat generation have little environmental stress. Several power converter topologies have been recently proposed in the literature for a variety of emerging applications. These novel converter topologies have different design criteria as well as particularities associated with the digital control system. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art and addresses recent breakthroughs in a range of power converter technology, with a special emphasis on design, emerging applications, and control.

This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power systems are evolving towards the Smart Grid paradigm, featured by large-scale integration of renewable energy resources, e.g. wind and solar power, deeper participation of demand side, and enhanced interaction with electric vehicles. While these emerging elements are inherently stochastic in nature, they are creating a challenge to the system’s stability and its control. In this context, conventional analysis tools are becoming less effective, and necessitate the use alternative tools that are able to deal with the high uncertainty and variability in the smart grid. Smart Grid initiatives have facilitated wide-spread deployment of advanced sensing and communication infrastructure, e.g. phasor measurement units at grid level and smart meters at household level, which collect tremendous amount of data in various time and space scales. How to fully utilize the data and extract useful knowledge from them, is of great importance and value to support the advanced stability assessment and control of the smart grid. The intelligent system strategy has been identified as an effective approach to meet the above needs. This book presents the cutting-edge intelligent system techniques and their applications for stability assessment and control of power systems. The major topics covered in this book are: Intelligent system design and algorithms for on-line stability assessment, which aims to use steady-state operating variables to achieve fast stability assessment for credible contingencies. Intelligent system design and algorithms for preventive stability control, which aims at transparent and interpretable decision-making on preventive control actions to manipulate system operating condition against possible contingencies. Intelligent system design and algorithms for real-time stability prediction, which aims to use synchronized measurements to foresee the stability status under an ongoing disturbance. Intelligent system design and algorithms for emergency stability control, which aims at fast decision-making on stability control actions at emergency stage where instability is propagating. Methodologies and algorithms for improving the robustness of intelligent systems against missing-data issues. This book is a reference and guide for researchers, students, and engineers who seek to study and design intelligent systems to resolve stability assessment and control problems in the smart grid age.

This book was released on 2020-12-21 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To further improve the NLOS detection and mitigation performance for Ultra-wideband (UWB) system, this thesis systematically investigates the UWB LOS/NLOS errors. The LOS errors are evaluated in different environments and with different distances. Different blockage materials and blockage conditions are considered for NLOS errors. The UWB signal propagation is also investigated. Furthermore, the relationships between the CIRs and the accurate/inaccurate range measurements are theoretically discussed in three different situations: ideal LOS path, small-scale fading: multipath and NLOS path. These theoretical relationships are validated with real measured CIRs in the Bosch Shanghai office environment. Based on the error and signal propagation investigation results, four different algorithms are proposed for four different scenarios to improve the NLOS identification accuracy. After the comparison of the localization performance for TOA/TDOA, it is found that on normal office floor, TOA works better than TDOA. In harsh industrial environments, where NLOS frequently occurs, TDOA is more suitable than TOA. Thus, in the first scenario, the position estimation is realized with TOA on the office floor, while in the second scenario, a novel approach to combined TOA and TDOA with accurate range and range difference selection is proposed in the harsh industrial environment. The optimization of the feature combination and parameters in machine learning algorithms for accurate measurement detection is discussed for both scenarios. For the third and fourth scenarios, the UWB/IMU fusion system stays in focus. Instead of detecting the NLOS outliers by assuming that the error distributions are Gaussian, the accurate measurement detection is realized based on the triangle inequality theorem. All the proposed approaches are tested with the collected measurements from the developed UWB system. The position estimation of these approaches has better accuracy than that of the traditional methods.
