Book excerpt: This book presents the state-of-the art of one of the main concerns with microprocessors today, a phenomenon known as "dark silicon". Readers will learn how power constraints (both leakage and dynamic power) limit the extent to which large portions of a chip can be powered up at a given time, i.e. how much actual performance and functionality the microprocessor can provide. The authors describe their research toward the future of microprocessor development in the dark silicon era, covering a variety of important aspects of dark silicon-aware architectures including design, management, reliability, and test. Readers will benefit from specific recommendations for mitigating the dark silicon phenomenon, including energy-efficient, dedicated solutions and technologies to maximize the utilization and reliability of microprocessors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his master thesis, Vladimir Herdt presents a novel approach, called complete symbolic simulation, for a more efficient verification of much larger (non-terminating) SystemC programs. The approach combines symbolic simulation with stateful model checking and allows to verify safety properties in (cyclic) finite state spaces, by exhaustive exploration of all possible inputs and process schedulings. The state explosion problem is alleviated by integrating two complementary reduction techniques. Compared to existing approaches, the complete symbolic simulation works more efficiently, and therefore can provide correctness proofs for larger systems, which is one of the most challenging tasks, due to the ever increasing complexity.

In this insightful book, Professor Sean Smith, who worked in information security long before the web appeared, explains that if we build the IoT the way we built the current internet and other information technology initiatives, we’re headed for trouble. With a focus on concrete solutions, The Internet of Risky Things explains how we can avoid simple flaws that have plagued several dramatic IT advances in recent decades. Developers, engineers, industrial designers, makers, and researchers will explore "design patterns of insecurities" and learn what’s required to route around or fix them in the nascent IoT. Examine bugs that plague large-scale systems, including integer overflow, race conditions, and memory corruption Look at successful and disastrous examples of previous quantum leaps in health IT, the smart grid, and autonomous vehicles Explore patterns in coding, authentication, and cryptography that led to insecurity Learn how blunders that led to spectacular IT disasters could have been avoided

Book excerpt: This book focuses on computing devices and their design at various levels to combat variability. The authors provide a review of key concepts with particular emphasis on timing errors caused by various variability sources. They discuss methods to predict and prevent, detect and correct, and finally conditions under which such errors can be accepted; they also consider their implications on cost, performance and quality. Coverage includes a comparative evaluation of methods for deployment across various layers of the system from circuits, architecture, to application software. These can be combined in various ways to achieve specific goals related to observability and controllability of the variability effects, providing means to achieve cross layer or hybrid resilience.
