This was primarily caused by the aging Baby Boomer population, which was evident in the growth of the proportion of the population between 45 and 54 years. _Nationally, the median value of owner-occupied housing units was $197,600. _Nine states had median home values exceeding $300,000 in 2008, led by Hawaii with a median home value of $560,200. Mississippi had the highest poverty rate in the nation, with over 21 percent of its population living in poverty. Arkansas, Kentucky, and Louisiana ranked among the top five, all with 17.3 percent. _Among the 75 largest counties, two of the four highest unemployment rates were in counties that topped the rankings for manufacturing employment (Macomb and Wayne counties in MI), and the other two ranked among the top counties for agricultural sales (Fresno and Kern counties in CA). _For the 3,141 counties (and county equivalents) in the United States, population in 2008 ranged from nearly 9.9 million in Los Angeles, CA, to 42 in Loving County, TX. _In 2008, 83.6 percent of Americans lived in metropolitan areas, but these metropolitan areas made up a mere 25 percent of the nation's land area. _Among the largest cities, 7 had growth rates exceeding 20 percent from 2000 to 2008. Two of these cities were in Texas (Fort Worth and Plano), and two were in North Carolina (Raleigh and Charlotte.) _The highest unemployment rates were found in Michigan 13th and 14th districts. Book Synopsis The State of the Child in Pennsylvania by : Martha C. Bergsten
Download or read book The State of the Child in Pennsylvania written by Martha C. Bergsten and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Kids Count report examines statewide trends in the well-being of Pennsylvania's children. The statistical portrait is based on trends in 17 indicators of child well being: (1) birth weight; (2) early prenatal care; (3) infant mortality; (4) substantiated cases of child abuse or neglect; (5) out-of-home placements; (6) delinquent children placed out-of-home; (7) Head Start enrollments; (8) regulated child care capacity; (9) public school dropouts; (10) child mortality; (11) child enrollment in Medicaid; (12) enrollment in Children's Health Insurance Program; (13) children receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families/Aid to Families with Dependent Children; (14) births to single mothers under age 20; (15) child poverty; (16) children in single-parent families; and (17) unemployment and income. The report is presented in six sections. Section 1 summarizes the findings. Section 2 provides statewide indicator information, including graphic multi-year profiles of the state as a whole; urban, rural, and mixed counties as groups; and Pennsylvania's racial and ethnic minority populations. Section 3 presents information organized by indicator. For each indicator, a two-page map and table show how each county fares on the indicator and how it compares to other counties. The table also compares each county with others in its population category. Section 4 provides profiles of each county, with graphs of multi-year trends, usually from 1983. There are also county-level racial/ethnic breakdowns and municipality breakouts. Section 5 charts performance, resources, and student statistics for all public school districts. Section 6, the report's appendix, defines indicators and lists data sources. Among the findings, the report indicates progress in the areas of regulated child care capacity, enrollment in Head Start, and substantiated reports of child abuse and neglect. The report also indicates negative progress in the areas of children living in poverty, child death rate, children in single parent homes, and children in foster care. (KB)
