Book Synopsis A Research Guide to Cartographic Resources by : Eva H. Dodsworth
Download or read book A Research Guide to Cartographic Resources written by Eva H. Dodsworth and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-09-22 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interdisciplinary uses of traditional cartographic resources and modern GIS tools allow for the analysis and discovery of information across a wide spectrum of fields. A Research Guide to Cartographic Resources navigates the numerous American and Canadian cartographic resources available in print and online, offering researchers, academics and students with information on how to locate and access the large variety of resources, new and old. Dozens of different cartographic materials are highlighted and summarized, along with lists of map libraries and geospatial centers, and related professional associations. A Research Guide to Cartographic Resources consists of 18 chapters, two appendices, and a detailed index that includes place names, and libraries, structured in a manner consistent with most reference guides, including cartographic categories such as atlases, dictionaries, gazetteers, handbooks, maps, plans, GIS data and other related material. Almost all of the resources listed in this guide are categorized by geography down to the county level, making efficient work of the type of material required to meet the information needs of those interested in researching place-specific cartographic-related resources. Additionally, this guide will help those interested in not only developing a comprehensive collection in these subject areas, but get an understanding of what materials are being collected and housed in specific map libraries, geospatial centers and their related websites. Of particular value are the sections that offer directories of cartographic and GIS libraries, as well as comprehensive lists of geospatial datasets down to the county level. This volume combines the traditional and historical collections of cartography with the modern applications of GIS-based maps and geospatial datasets.

Book Synopsis The State of the Child in Pennsylvania by : Martha C. Bergsten
Download or read book The State of the Child in Pennsylvania written by Martha C. Bergsten and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Kids Count report examines statewide trends in the well-being of Pennsylvania's children. The statistical portrait is based on trends in 17 indicators of child well being: (1) birth weight; (2) early prenatal care; (3) infant mortality; (4) substantiated cases of child abuse or neglect; (5) out-of-home placements; (6) delinquent children placed out-of-home; (7) Head Start enrollments; (8) regulated child care capacity; (9) public school dropouts; (10) child mortality; (11) child enrollment in Medicaid; (12) enrollment in Children's Health Insurance Program; (13) children receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families/Aid to Families with Dependent Children; (14) births to single mothers under age 20; (15) child poverty; (16) children in single-parent families; and (17) unemployment and income. The report is presented in six sections. Section 1 summarizes the findings. Section 2 provides statewide indicator information, including graphic multi-year profiles of the state as a whole; urban, rural, and mixed counties as groups; and Pennsylvania's racial and ethnic minority populations. Section 3 presents information organized by indicator. For each indicator, a two-page map and table show how each county fares on the indicator and how it compares to other counties. The table also compares each county with others in its population category. Section 4 provides profiles of each county, with graphs of multi-year trends, usually from 1983. There are also county-level racial/ethnic breakdowns and municipality breakouts. Section 5 charts performance, resources, and student statistics for all public school districts. Section 6, the report's appendix, defines indicators and lists data sources. Among the findings, the report indicates progress in the areas of regulated child care capacity, enrollment in Head Start, and substantiated reports of child abuse and neglect. The report also indicates negative progress in the areas of children living in poverty, child death rate, children in single parent homes, and children in foster care. (KB)
