Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first edition of Equine Nutrition and Feeding was published in 1986, it has become the seminal work on the subject. It covers all the key topics that you need to know for your equine nutrition degree course. This comprehensive and clearly evidenced textbook covers how food is digested and nutrients are used in growing, working and breeding horses. It also explains the scientific basis for calculating nutrient and dietary requirements in an understandable manner, and shows you how to do these calculations. Special attention is also given to grassland and pasture, and to housing and diet-related diseases. Additional, student-friendly features include: References to the most up-to-date information, including “Nutrient Requirements of Horses”, from the National Research Council (2007). Case histories to provide practical examples. Study questions at the end of each chapter to help you to revise. A comprehensive glossary of terms and abbreviations. Changes to this fourth edition: Evidence base has been expanded, with 646 new research reports and papers being incorporated. Extensively revised to make navigation easier. A new section is dedicated to the weaning and growth of the foal. This book is the essential text for any undergraduate and postgraduate student of equine nutrition, equine veterinary medicine, equine veterinary nursing or agricultural science. It is also used by equine nutritionists and horse owners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Advances in Animal Nutrition-1978 is a collection of papers that tackles various topics concerning livestock feeding. The book presents a total of 12 materials that cover different livestock, particularly poultry, pigs, and dairy cows. The text first covers poultry feeding related topics, such as the factors affecting amino acid requirements of meat birds; protein-energy interactions in broiler and turkey rations; and nutrition-disease interactions of leg weakness in poultry. Next, the book tackles pig feeding concerns, including amino acid nutrition of the pig; energy requirements of the growing pig; and processing and preparation of cereals for pig diets. The remaining chapters discuss topics relevant to dairy cow diet, such as ratios for high-yielding dairy cows; concentrate feeding of dairy cows; and complete-diet feeding of dairy cows. The text will be most useful to both researchers and practitioners of animal related disciplines, such as agriculture and veterinary medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book grew from small beginnings as I began to find unexpected patterns emerging from the data in the literature. The more I thought about the way in which primate social systems worked, the more interesting things turned out to be. I am conscious that, at times, this has introduced a certain amount of complexity into the text. I make no apologies for that: what we are dealing with is a complex subject, the product of evolutionary forces interacting with very sophisticated minds. None the less, I have done my best to explain every thing as clearly as I can in order to make the book accessible to as wide an audience as possible. I have laid a heavy emphasis in this book on the use of simple graphical and mathematical models. Their sophistication, however, is not great and does not assume more than a knowledge of elementary probability theory. Since their role will inevitably be misunderstood, I take this opportunity to stress that their function is essentially heuristic rather than explanatory: they are designed to focus our attention on the key issues so as to point out the directions for further research. A model is only as good as the questions it prompts us to ask. For those whose natural inclination is to dismiss modelling out of hand, I can only point to the precision that their use can offer us in terms of hypothesis-testing.

Book excerpt: This 3rd edition of Food and Agricultural Biotechnology in Ethical Perspective updates Thompson’s analysis to reflect the next generation of biotechnology, including synthetic biology, gene editing and gene drives. The first two editions of this book, published as Food Biotechnology in Ethical Perspective in 1997 and 2007, were the first comprehensive philosophical studies of genetic engineering applied to food systems. The book is structured with chapter length treatments of risk in four categories: food safety, to animals, to the environment and socio-economic risks. These chapters are preceded by two chapters providing orientation to the uses of gene technology in food and agriculture, and to the goals, methods and background assumptions of technological ethics. There is also a chapter covering all four types of risk as applied to the first US technology, recombinant bovine somatotropin. The last four chapters take up 1) intellectual property debates, 2) religious, metaphysical and “intrinsic” objections to biotechnology, 3) issues in risk and trust and 4) a review of ethical issues in synthetic biology, gene editing and gene drives, the three key technologies that have emerged since the book was last revised.

Book excerpt: EQUINE CLINICAL NUTRITION Authoritative resource on the nutritional management of horses, now incorporating the iterative learning process The second edition of Equine Clinical Nutrition is a fully updated and expanded revision of the classic student text on nutritional management of horses, covering updated nutrient recommendations, rations, feeding management, clinical nutrition and many other important topics in the field. To aid in reader comprehension, this new edition takes a new instructional approach to nutritional management using an iterative sequence of defined procedures. Divided into distinct sections for easy accessibility, this book is a comprehensive resource for feeding practices and management of healthy and sick horses alike. A thorough understanding of life stages, anatomy, physiology, and behavior underpins the practice of clinical nutrition. Sample topics covered in Equine Clinical Nutrition include: The evolution of horses to changing food supply, the importance of their microbiome, and the behavior patterns of feeding and drinking Nutrient metabolism of water, energy, protein, minerals, and vitamins, plus ration assessment, farm investigations, forages, and toxic plants Manufactured feeds, dietary supplements, USA feed regulations, and feed safety protocols Nutritional assessment of horses by life stage, recognizing pain and discomfort behaviors, and dietary management of weight and major system disorders Equine Clinical Nutrition is an essential text for students of veterinary medicine, animal science, pre-veterinary programs, and a desk reference for equine practitioners wanting practical clinical feeding recommendations. With comprehensive coverage of the topic, it is an essential text for everything related to nutrition in horses.

Book excerpt: Dietary fiber is a topic that has burgeoned from an esoteric interest of a few research laboratories to a subject of international interest. This growth has been helped by the intense public interest in the potential benefits of adding fiber to the diet. The general popularity of fiber may have been helped by the perception that, for once, medicine was saying "do" instead of "don't. " There has been a proliferation of excellent scientific books on dietary fiber. Why another? The Spring Symposium on Dietary Fiber in Health and Disease was an outgrowth of our belief that informal discussion among peers-a discussion in which fact is freely interlaced with speculation-was the most effective way to organize our knowledge and direct our thinking. The normal growth progression of a discipline inc1udes its branching into many areas. Soon the expertise, which was once general, is broken into many specialties. Intercommunication becoIlles increasingly difficult. It was our intent to provide a forum that would expose its participants to developments in areas related to their research interest. Free exchange under these conditions could not help but broaden everyone's knowl edge and expand his horizons. We feel that this symposium was singularly successful in achieving its goals. It resulted in a free and friendly exchange of knowledge and ideas. It helped to establish seeds for future collaborations based on mutual interest and friendship. The proceedings of this conference will serve as yet another basic resource in the fiber field.
