Book excerpt: The 1961 edition of the Promenade Yearbook from Maryville College of the Sacred Heart. The books were named to signify both the strolls around the campus and the "promenade" from freshman year to graduation. The name can be accredited to students Mary Helen Schaeffer (1940) and Margaret Boland (1940). Within this edition, the faculty and staff, graduating class, and the lower classes are photographed and labeled, as well as various clubs and sports teams from Maryville College in 1961. The class of 1961 was the last class to graduate from the Maryville College of the Sacred Heart campus at the 2900 Meramec Street address in the city of St. Louis. A new campus opened on Conway Road in west St. Louis County in the fall of 1961. Page 3 of the Promenade states "I, the Old Maryville, will cease to be in the concrete framework of halls and doorways, dormitories and classrooms. My physical end is near, but my spiritual influence is at its moment of rebirth. Confidently, I can trust my own offspring, the New Maryville, with the power of my tradition to be instilled into her children and my grandchildren for generations to come. Those who pass with me from the old to the new college must carry with them the ideals I have inspired through the years. By outstanding example and fervent efforts, they must lay an adamant foundation of Christian excellence in scholastic and social activities. I have labored long and am a bit weary from clearing the path of the past. I have tried to accomplish the task set before me and I give the work of its completion into newer, younger, stronger hands to construct the spirit for the future, to contribute to the progress of man."
