Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whiz-Bangs and Woolly Bears is a story about a soldier of the Great War and his experiences as an artillery gunner in France. I used to listen carefully to his stories while we worked on his farm in Carleton County, New Brunswick. He had kept a diary during the war, and I later had a chance to look at it. The short entries did not begin to describe the horrors of the Western Front in 1917 and 1918. As I grew older, I began to write him to ask about the details. He responded to questions about major battles in this example: "Passchendaele was just one glorious mudhole. We were there 42 days. Kept 24 men on the guns and lost 42 in the time, an average of one a day." This is the essence of what Whiz Bangs and Woolly Bears is about. It is a running discourse between a grandfather, Walter Ray Estabrooks and his grandson Hal Skaarup, now in the army as well. Although the story is essentially about Walter Estabrooks, his experiences during the Great War, it is also about the fact that he lived to tell the tale. So many did not.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Rayford W. Logan’s astute history of Howard University appeared in 1969, Logan was in a unique position to analyze one of the nation’s most prominent African American colleges. He had recently completed nearly thirty years at Howard as a history professor, living and teaching through almost a third of the school’s first century. Drawing from his own knowledge and university documents, Logan traced Howard’s chronology from 1866, when it was conceived as a theological seminary for African American ministers, to the increasingly successful, and in Logan’s words, cosmopolitan, institution of the 1960s. Logan detailed university milestones, including Howard’s founding by an act of Congress in 1867 and the election of Dr. Mordecai W. Johnson, the university’s first black president, in 1926, as well as the accomplishments of Howard graduates. More than thirty years after its first publication, Logan’s engaging account is essential for a thorough understanding of Howard, and its place in the legacy of historically black universities.

This book was released on 2012-11-17 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 9/11, Canada’s reputation as an inclusive country that takes in immigrants and refugees has been clouded by restrictive immigration policies, increased interdiction, and the detention of asylum seekers. Moreover, public debate over the arrival of non-citizens -- especially those seeking entry through unofficial channels -- is now often framed within a security discourse that is used to justify a more restrictive approach. These developments are not surprising in the current context, but as Anderson illustrates, they are also nothing new. Canadian Liberalism and the Politics of Border Control sheds light on the long and complex history of Canada’s efforts to control its borders. Framing pivotal moments within a long-standing but often overlooked debate over the rights of non-citizens, Anderson demonstrates that today’s more restrictive approach reflects traditions deeply embedded within liberal democracies. His insights into Canadian immigration and refugee history offer valuable lessons for understanding the nature of contemporary liberal-democratic control policies.

Book excerpt: The fourth book of the Drawing Gallery Series is devoted to Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867). Considered one of the greatest French draughtsmen of all time, the artist left thousands of preparatory drawings for his paintings, along with an incomparable series of almost five hundred graphite portraits that have always been deemed the highest expression of his genius. The Louvre collection offers excellent examples of these two aspects of Ingres' graphic activity; each work is accompanied by a brief comment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Softcover book - The latest incarnation of Brother Can You Spare A Dime? - Modern Dime Size Silver Coins of the World with Footnotes to History has been published in a Third Edition. This work, a many year project to study these coins as miniature engravings of Art and History, was first published in 1997. Several years later a CD-rom was produced as the Second Edition. The author won a Numismatic Literary Guild Award for this Edition. The Third Edition, a 600 page book with over a thousand enlarged scans of the coins from the mid 1800's to 1970 show coins from around the world - Afghanistan to Yemen. These coins were the money of the people at the time; one would represent a days work, purchase a meal or a night's entertainment. Kings, Queens and Statesmen are portrayed on dozens, with little biographies of many. More than a numismatic book, this anthology is a fine way to develop a better understanding of money in use during the previous two centuries. A great addition to your numismatic library.

Book excerpt: In 1861, the death penalty was abolished for sodomy in Britain; just over a century later, in 1967, homosexuality was finally decriminalised. Between these legal landmarks lies a century of seismic shifts in gender and sexuality for men and women. These found expression across the arts as British artists, collectors and consumers explored transgressive identities, experiences and desires. Some of these works were intensely personal, celebrating lovers or expressing private desires. Others addressed a wider public, helping to forge a sense of community at a time when the modern categories of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender were largely unrecognised. Ranging from the playful to the political, the explicit to the domestic, these works showcase the rich diversity of queer British art. This publication, the first to focus exclusively on British queer art, will feature sections on ambivalent sexualities and gender experimentation amongst the Pre-Raphaelites; the new science of sexology's impact on portraiture; queer domesticities in Bloomsbury and beyond; eroticism in the artist's studio and relationships between artists and models; gender play and sexuality in British surrealism; and love and lust in sixties Soho. 00Exhibition: Tate Britain, London, United Kingdom (05.04.2017-01.10.2017).

Book excerpt: George Ritzer is one of the leading social and cultural commentators of the present day. In this essential new book he considers some of the main tendencies in contemporary social theory. Included here are Ritzer′s latest reflections on the uses and misuses of metatheory. According to Ritzer, sociology is a multiparadigm science. The differences and intensities of rivalries between paradigms are often very confusing for students and even for professional sociologists. This book seeks to find a way out of the confusion by sketching out the lineaments of a new integrated sociological paradigm and demonstrates how this paradigm can be applied. It shows the various ways in which Ritzer has developed rationalization theory to shed light on professional integration, the shape of consumer culture, hyperrationality and the state of sociology today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book develops a critique of utopianism through a provocative comparison of the works of Karl Marx and F. A. Hayek, thus engaging two vastly different traditions in critical dialogue. By emphasizing the methodological and substantive similarities between Marxian and Hayekian perspectives, it challenges each tradition's most precious assumptions about the other. Through this comparative analysis, the book articulates the crucial distinctions between utopian and radical theorizing. Sciabarra examines the dialectical method of social inquiry common to both Marxian and Hayekian thought and argues that both Marx and Hayek rejected utopian theorizing because it internalizes an abstract, ahistorical, exaggerated sense of human possibility. The chief disagreement between Marx and Hayek, he shows, is not political but epistemological, reflecting their differing assumptions about the limits of reason.
