Book Synopsis Dictionary of Italian-Turkish Language (1641) by Giovanni Molino by : Elżbieta Święcicka
Download or read book Dictionary of Italian-Turkish Language (1641) by Giovanni Molino written by Elżbieta Święcicka and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Giovanni Molino’s Dittionario Della Lingua Italiana, Turchesca (1641), is the first extensive Turkish dictionary of its kind, with nearly 8000 lexical head entries excerpted, not from the Ottoman literature, but the everyday Turkish language, the vernacular for at least a part of the population of 17th century Constantinople. Molino, born Armenus Turcicus Yovhannēs of Ankara, was exposed to the Turkish language from childhood, unlike other authors of the known ‘texts in transcription”. In Armenian cultural history, he is remembered as a man of letters, a publisher and the translator of religious texts, whose services to the history of the Turkish language and the corresponding contribution to Ottoman Turkish culture were to this date unknown. The editor has reversed and reorganised the material of the lexicon from Italian-Turkish to Turkish-Italian. The lexical entries of Molino’s dictionary are presented according to morphological and phonological principles, with their orthographic variants side by side, revealing information on the morpho-phonological patterns of Ottoman-Turkish at that time. The language Molino recorded sounds almost like contemporary Turkish and can be considered a bridge to the modern Turkish language.

Book Synopsis Conversion and Apostasy in the Late Ottoman Empire by : Selim Deringil
Download or read book Conversion and Apostasy in the Late Ottoman Empire written by Selim Deringil and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-27 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineteenth-century Ottoman Empire traditional religious structures crumbled as the empire itself began to fall apart. The state's answer to schism was regulation and control, administered in the form of a number of edicts in the early part of the century. It is against this background that different religious communities and individuals negotiated survival by converting to Islam when their political interests or their lives were at stake. As the century progressed, however, conversion was no longer sufficient to guarantee citizenship and property rights as the state became increasingly paranoid about its apostates and what it perceived as their 'denationalization'. The book tells the story of the struggle between the Ottoman State, the Great Powers and a multitude of evangelical organizations, shedding light on current flash-points in the Arab world and the Balkans, offering alternative perspectives on national and religious identity and the interconnection between the two.

Download or read book From Empire to Republic written by Taner Akçam and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taner Akçam is one of the first Turkish academics to acknowledge and discuss openly the Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman-Turkish government in 1915. This book discusses western political policies towards the region generally, and represents the first serious scholarly attempt to understand the Genocide from a perpetrator rather than victim perspective, and to contextualize those events within Turkey's political history. By refusing to acknowledge the fact of genocide, successive Turkish governments not only perpetuate massive historical injustice, but also pose a fundamental obstacle to Turkey's democratization today.

This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. ---- This is Not a Love Song: Video Art and Pop Music Crossovers exhibition catalogue traces the genealogy of the relations between video art and pop music from the 1960s to today in which video art and pop music crossed roads. The catalogue features a substantial essay on video art and pop music relationship by curator F. Javier Panera Cuevas. The five chapters in the catalogue Art in Pop, Pop in Art, Hysteria and Religion, ‘Non-Musicians’ vs ‘Non-Artists’ Rock and Conceptual Art, Rock and Its Double: Pop Music as a ‘Toolbox’ and Dance Music Politics present a deeper look into the works in the exhibition. This is Not a Love Song suggests that the relations between music and the visual arts force us to reconsider another history of art, in which musicians and artists can position themselves either as actors in the hegemonic cultural system or as critical radicals whose traces, as Greil Marcus would say, can be as intense and as short-lived 'as a lipstick stain that is removed but leaves a profound imprint on our memory.

Book excerpt: It is the late fifteenth century in rural Russia, a time of plague and pestilence. A young orphan lives by the forest with his elderly grandfather, the local healer. From him he learns the secrets of herbs and remedies, and soon follows in the old man's footsteps. But this knowledge proves powerless to save his beloved, who dies in childbirth. Overcome with guilt and seeking redemption, he embarks on a journey through plague-ridden Europe, offering his healing powers wherever he goes. But this is no ordinary journey- it is one that spans ages and countries, and brings him face-to-face with a host of unforgettable characters and legendary creatures from the strangest medieval bestiaries. Now old, and having addressed his wrongs, he returns to his home village to live out his days as a hermit - not realizing that it is here that he will face his most difficult trial yet. Winner of two of the biggest literary prizes in Russia, Laurus is a remarkably rich novel about the eternal themes of love, loss, self-sacrifice and faith, from one of the country's most exciting and critically acclaimed novelists.
