Download or read book Voltaire written by Ian Davidson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive biography of Voltaire's life—from his scandalous love affairs and political maneuverings to his inspired philosophy. We think of Voltaire as the archetypal figure of the enlightenment; in his own time he was also the most famous and controversial figure in Europe. This dazzling new biography celebrates his extraordinary life. Davidson tells the whole, rich story of Voltaire’s life (1694-1778): his early imprisonment in the Bastille; exile in England and his mastery of English; an obsession with money, of which he made a huge amount; a scandalous love life; a long exile on the borders of Switzerland; his human-rights campaigns and his triumphant return to Paris to die there as celebrity extraordinaire. Throughout all of this, Voltaire’s life was always informed by two things: a belief in the essential value of toleration in the face of fanaticism; and in the right of every man to think and say what he liked. It is rare to have such a vivid portrait of a great man.

Download or read book Belle of the Brawl written by Fred S. Lull and published by History Publishing Group. This book was released on 2011 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wartime biography follows the life of a Second World War B-17 bombardier from the beginning of the war to its conclusion. Based on the 150 letters the airman, Fred Lull, wrote home to his mother, much of the horrors of what he experienced off the wing of his plane, aircraft destroyed, dismemberment by flak, go unshared. Fred did not want his mother to worry and could not tell her: 'I noticed some movement and a flash of light out of the corner of my right eye. The plane that had been flying right next to us had exploded and simply disappeared.'Using the bombardier's combat flight record, research data and interviews of former B-17 crew members, the story unfolds, breaking through the barrier of an unwillingness and inability to tell loved ones of the smell and taste of war.
Book Synopsis A Southern Writer and the Civil War by : Jeffery J. Rogers
Download or read book A Southern Writer and the Civil War written by Jeffery J. Rogers and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians of the American Civil War have debated a wide range of questions raised by the war and its outcome. None have been more vigorously argued as those surrounding its outcome. One of the leading explanations for Confederate defeat has been the argument that the Civil War South lacked a national identity. Related to and supporting this argument is the contention that the Civil War South failed to produce a distinct and vibrant literary culture. These contentions have been challenged by a growing body of literature which argues that the Civil War South did produce a sense of cultural and national identity. This book adds to this counter current through an examination of the Civil War experiences and writings of the Antebellum South's leading literary figure. Surprisingly, given William Gilmore Simms' well-known status prior to the war, his life and work during the course of the war itself has been understudied. This examination reveals the depth and extent to which Simms not only supported the Confederate war effort but how Simms conceptualized and articulated a vision of Confederate nationalism.

Jackson v. Birmingham Board of Education, 544 U.S. 167 (2005) In order to increase opportunities for mediation, the EEOC expanded the charges eligible for mediation and now mediation is available at the conciliation stage, after a finding of discrimination has been issued, in appropriate cases The U.S. Supreme Court has held that under the Federal Arbitration Act, where parties to an arbitration agreement include a provision that delegates to the arbitrator the threshold question of enforceability of the arbitration agreement, if a party specifically challenges the enforceability of the entire agreement, the arbitrator would consider the challenge. If, however, the party only challenges the enforceability of the arbitration provision, the challenge must be heard by a court. Rent-A-Center, West Inc. v. Jackson, 130 S. Ct. 2772 (2010) The lack of timeliness in filing a discrimination action is an affirmative defense and the burden of proof is on the employer. Salas v. Wisconsin Department of Corrections, 493 F.3d 913, 922 (7th Cir 2007) A federal employee's premature filing of a sexual harassment employment discrimination and retaliation complaint did not constitute a failure to exhaust administrative remedies so as to deprive the district court of subject-matter jurisdiction. Brown v. Snow, 440 F.3d 1259 (11th Cir. 2006) A majority of states impose a shorter period for filing with their agencies, though, so the filing deadline is not always extended when a state has its own agency The andquot;single filing ruleandquot; - under which a party who has not filed an EEOC charge or received a right-to-sue notice may andquot;piggybackandquot; his or her judicial action on the claim of a party who has satisfied those prerequisites - has been described as a andquot;carefully limited exceptionandquot; to Title VII's procedural requirements. Price v. Choctaw Glove and Safety Co., 459 F.3d 595 (5th Cir. 2006) Provided that an act contributing to the claim occurs within the filing period, the court may consider the entire period of the hostile environment for purposes of determining liability. Jordan v. City of Cleveland, 464 F.3d 584 (6th Cir. 2006) The Supreme Court has held that a plaintiff's timely filing of an EEOC intake questionnaire, which was followed by an affidavit stating andquot; Please force Federal Express to end their age discrimination . . .andquot; constituted a charge, cautioning, however, that its permissiv

Download or read book Vitagraph written by Andrew A. Erish and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2022 Peter C. Rollins Book Award and the 2022 Browne Best Edited Reference/Primary Source Work in Popular and American Culture Award In Vitagraph: America's First Great Motion Picture Studio, Andrew A. Erish provides a comprehensive examination and reassessment of the company most responsible for defining and popularizing the American movie. This history challenges long-accepted Hollywood mythology that Paramount and Fox invented the feature film, that Universal created the star system, and that these companies, along with MGM and Warner Bros., developed motion pictures into a multimillion-dollar business. In fact, the truth about Vitagraph is far more interesting than the myths that later moguls propagated about themselves. Established in 1897 by J. Stuart Blackton and Albert E. Smith, Vitagraph was the leading producer of motion pictures for much of the silent era. Vitagraph established America's studio system, a division of labor utilizing specialized craftspeople and artists and developed fundamental aspects of American movies, from framing, lighting, and performance style to emphasizing character-driven comedy and drama in stories that respected and sometimes poked fun at every demographic of Vitagraph's vast audience. For most of its existence America's most influential studio was headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, before relocating to Hollywood. A historically rigorous and thorough account of the most influential producer of American motion pictures during the silent era, Erish draws on valuable primary material long overlooked by other historians to introduce readers to the fascinating, forgotten pioneers of Vitagraph.
