This book was released on 1999-07-21 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new three volume series presents a broad and integrated approach to water management, purification, and conservation in arid climates. Volume one includes an introductory chapter on water problems and water resources in arid climates followed by specific chapters covering various aspects of water management. Volumes two and three deal with water purification and water conservation, respectively. Many textbooks on water issues normally deal with only one of these areas. This series covers all three areas with an emphasis on the problems faced by arid regions. The three volume series will appeal to industry specialists in desalination and wastewater treatment, irrigation engineers, graduate and undergraduate students in hydrology, water management and conservation professionals, government personnel involved in water resources development, decision makers, environmentalists, employees of the petrochemical industry, and individuals wishing to specialize in water management, purification and conservation.
Book Synopsis Management of Irrigation and Drainage Systems by : Hector M. Malano
Download or read book Management of Irrigation and Drainage Systems written by Hector M. Malano and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides an overview of the principles required for a service orientation in the management of irrigation and drainage systems. The material covered is designed to emphasize an area largely neglected in the irrigation and drainage management literature. The dominating philosophy underlying this book is that irrigation and drainage systems must be managed as a service business responsive to the needs and changing requirements of its customers. It is postulated that this service approach to the management of irrigation and drainage systems consitutes a key element of the startegy that is needed to improve the current level of performance of many irrigation and drainage systems worldwide. Enhanced performance of irrigation is a prerequisite if we are to face the enormous challenge of producing greater quantities of food to meet the demand of a growing population. This is particularly the case in an environment with increasing competition for water from industry and urban water users, set against mounting concerns about environmental sustainability.
Book Synopsis Beyond Measure: The Hidden History of Measurement from Cubits to Quantum Constants by : James Vincent
Download or read book Beyond Measure: The Hidden History of Measurement from Cubits to Quantum Constants written by James Vincent and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2022-11-01 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vibrant account of how measurement has invisibly shaped our world, from ancient civilizations to the modern day. From the cubit to the kilogram, the humble inch to the speed of light, measurement is a powerful tool that humans invented to make sense of the world. In this revelatory work of science and social history, James Vincent dives into its hidden world, taking readers from ancient Egypt, where measuring the annual depth of the Nile was an essential task, to the intellectual origins of the metric system in the French Revolution, and from the surprisingly animated rivalry between metric and imperial, to our current age of the “quantified self.” At every turn, Vincent is keenly attuned to the political consequences of measurement, exploring how it has also been used as a tool for oppression and control. Beyond Measure reveals how measurement is not only deeply entwined with our experience of the world, but also how its history encompasses and shapes the human quest for knowledge.

Book Synopsis Institutional arrangements for land drainage in developing countries by : Claudia Freisem
Download or read book Institutional arrangements for land drainage in developing countries written by Claudia Freisem and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2001 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature review on “Institutional arrangements for land drainage in developing countries” provides an overview over irrigation and drainage development, drainage problems and, in particular, displays the institutional arrangements in selected countries (Egypt, India, Peru, the Philippines and South Africa). India, the Philippines and South Africa are countries where IWMI is interested in carrying out research on the relationship between the effectiveness of institutions and performance; Egypt has developed institutions capable of addressing drainage needs; Peru is in the process of establishing Autonomous Hydrological Basin Authorities for catchment-wide management of water resources including drainage.
Book Synopsis Geospatial Technologies for Land Degradation Assessment and Management by : R. S. Dwivedi
Download or read book Geospatial Technologies for Land Degradation Assessment and Management written by R. S. Dwivedi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-10-17 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The constant growth of the world’s population and the decline of the availability of land and soil resources are global concerns for food security. Other concerns are the decrease in productivity and delivery of essential ecosystems services because of the decline of soil quality and health by a range of degradation processes. Key soil properties like soil bulk density, organic carbon concentration, plant available water capacity, infiltration rate, air porosity at field moisture capacity, and nutrient reserves, are crucial properties for soil functionality which refers to the capacity of soil to perform numerous functions. These functions are difficult to measure directly and are estimated through indices of soil quality and soil health. Soil degradation, its extent and severity, can also be estimated by assessing indices of soil quality and health. "Geospatial Technology for Land Degradation Assessment and Management" uses satellite imagery and remote sensing technologies to measure landscape parameters and terrain attributes. Remote sensing and geospatial technologies are important tools in assessing the extent and the severity of land and soil degradation, their temporal changes, and geospatial distribution in a timely and cost-effective manner. The knowledge presented in the book by Dr. R.S. Dwivedi shows how remote sensing data can be utilized for inventorying, assessing, and monitoring affected ecosystems and how this information can be integrated in the models of different local settings. Through many land degradations studies, land managers, researchers, and policymakers will find practical applications of geospatial technologies and future challenges. The information presented is also relevant to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations towards global food security.

Book Synopsis Water Productivity in Agriculture by : J. W. Kijne
Download or read book Water Productivity in Agriculture written by J. W. Kijne and published by CABI. This book was released on 2003 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *First title in a major new series *Addresses improving water productivity to relieve problems of scarcity and competition to provide for food and environmental security *Draws from scientists having a multitude of disciplines to approach this important problem In a large number of developing countries, policy makers and researchers are increasingly aware of the conflicting demands on water, and look at agriculture to be more effective in its use of water. Focusing on both irrigated and rain-fed agriculture, this book gives a state of the art review of the limits and opportunities for improving water productivity in crop production. It demonstrates how efficiency of water use can be enhanced to maximize yields. The book represents the first in a new series of volumes resulting from the Comprehensive Assessment of Water Management in Agriculture, a research program conducted by the CGIAR's Future Harvest Centres, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and partners worldwide. It will be of significant interest to those working in areas of soil and crop science, water management, irrigation, and development studies.
