Book excerpt: Parentless Parents is the first book to show how the absence of grandparents impacts everything about the way mothers and fathers raise their children--from everyday parenting decisions to the relationships they have with their spouses and in-laws. For the first time in U.S. history, as the average age of women giving birth has increased significantly, millions of children are at risk of having fewer years with their grandparents than ever before. How has this substantial shift affected parents and kids? Journalist, award-winning television producer, and parentless parent Allison Gilbert has polled and studied more than 1,300 parentless parents from across the United States and a dozen other countries to find out. Through her pioneering research, Gilbert not only shares her own story and the significant and poignant effect that this trend has had on her and hundreds of other families, but also the myriad ways these mothers and fathers have learned to keep the memory of their parents alive for their children, and to find the support and understanding they need.

Camp Grandma is full of innovative ideas that Marianne Waggoner Day, a highly successful businesswoman who became a committed and dedicated grandmother, modified from her working life in an effort to connect with her grandchildren. Along the way, she realized that in teaching her grandchildren, she in turn was learning some unexpected and invaluable lessons from them. Here, Day offers a new and refreshing perspective on grandparenting. Readers will be introduced to a compelling, sometimes humorous, and totally unexpected twist on a role people often take for granted—as well as enter into the larger societal conversation we should be having about the possibilities and value of grandparenting and how the women’s movement has reinvigorated and reshaped women’s approach to being grandmothers. Full of ideas and creative ways for grandparents to help their grandchildren grow strong, think critically, and have fun all at the same time, Camp Grandma reveals the importance of grandparenting and the value of passing on traditions, knowledge, and wisdom to the new generation. Babysitter? Not even close.

Book excerpt: Grandmas Gleanings are the result of many years of journaling done by Joyce Pomp during her quiet time with the Lord. She is a pastors wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. The devotionals are saturated with Gods Word; they are also intended to bring you into a special relationship with our Father God, not a plastic, must-do religious activity. Grandma Joyce was encouraged to compile her writings into a yearly devotion book. Individuals who have had the opportunity to read Gleanings have told her how the true anecdotes/incidents have touched a specific need in their life as they read an entry for the day. Come to know God loves you. Come to know true joy in your life. Know that God still performs miracles today. Be assured: The joy of the Lord is your strength. You will be challenged. You will be blessed.

Book excerpt: First you marry a man who does not want children. He cheats and you divorce him. Then you marry the love of your life and find out he does not want to have children with you either. The three he has are more than enough. Although you always wanted to be a mother, you decide he is worth the sacrifice, expecting to have a long happy life together. But that's not what happens. This is the story of how a woman becomes childless by marriage and how it affects every aspect of her life. This is the book of my heart, the one I had to write. Ever since I realized I was not going to have children, I have felt recurring grief and an emptiness in my heart. I am different from most women, but I have found that I am not alone. There are many of us childless women, and I think it's important to share our stories about what it's like when you don't have children in a world where most girls grow up to become mothers. I hope this book offers comfort to those who are childless and understanding to those who are not. If it makes you smile here and there, even better.

For most of us, news of a grandchild's impending arrival will send us into a dizzying array of emotions. Like other major events in our lives, no single emotion fits the bill. How could it? The birth of a grandchild signals a new stage of your life - a new beginning. There are so many different ways to be involved in our grandchildren's lives - and it is up to us to choose the ones we are most comfortable with. Grandparents today are very different from grandparents of only a generation ago: we are generally healthier, busier and more likely to still be working when our first grandchild arrives. As a result, our role as grandparent can vary greatly - from being the on-hand care giver while parents go to work; or the long distance grand who explores grand parenting via emails, letters, photographs and presents; or you may be somewhere in between - providing regular supportive and fun contact with your grandchildren. In whatever capacity, there are great joys to be had rediscovering the passage of childhood for the third time and relearning the skills of parenting, once removed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is amazing to realize that much of the Western medical community is in a love/hate relationship with the economics of medicine. Quality-Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) is one of the primary methods of guiding many medical decision-makers in the allocation of limited medical resources. Herein lies the problem of medicine and economics. It seems that deciding who will receive limited medical resources is a task filled with moral and ethical difficulties, even for those depending on the information obtained from QALY calculations. These moral and ethical difficulties are beyond the scope of sound bites that tout the benefits of universal health care, affordable insurance, or the safety of the free-market economy. The breadth of the difficulty is found in the widespread disagreement concerning how the health-care system should be distributed or fixed, since most will agree that there is a problem with distributing medical resources. It seemed obvious that some difficult decisions will need to be made that few are both willing and able to make. This difficulty is particularly true in decisions about health-care allocation, and that is where QALYs have been found useful and problematic. Limiting medical care for the elderly based upon their age did not occur until the mid-twentieth century possibly because the elderly held a unique position of respect in the Western community. It is no longer the case that the elderly are given a unique position of respect and dignity. Rather, it seems that with the increased use of QALY calculations, the elderly are in danger of receiving less medical care than they are warranted. It is imperative that Christians respond to the ethical implications of significant models of resource allocation that currently assist decision-makers in the allocation process, such as QALYs.

Rehabilitating four-greed stricken dentists is a task Irish butler EDWIN HEDGECROFT takes very seriously. As Ella, a former newspaper reporter on vacation in Ireland, examines past grievances with dental professionals HARRY BADGER, NELGON FESTOON, GUILLIAM MOREDUCK and MOTT FINKS, Hedgecroft's partner in concert MOTHER NATURE delivers invitations to a special meeting. The train stops within walking distance of Honest House, where a directional sign swings aimlessly until wind ceases and the dentists see the gate. Before them is another sign: "Dish Keepers, This Way." Mother Nature and Hedgecroft guide the dentists to consequences of greed. Imbalances in humanity stir up raging storms. These dentists learn why they are suddenly in the grips of phantom teeth, giant saliva containers, an indiscriminate tooth-plucking assistant, grotesquely repulsive nurses and dishes from every far corner of the world.

Grandparenting may be different today, but it still can be meaningful and fun for both the kids and the adults. Today's grandparent needs to understand technology--how it mesmerizes grandchildren but also enhances the opportunities to connect and share life experiences. The author addresses topics relevant to all grandparents and also looks at the challenges of grandchildren living in single parent or blended families. Also included are stories from the author's journey with her own grandchildren--including Duck Dynasty's Sadie Robertson.

Book excerpt: A beautiful meditation on the joys of being a grandparent and a practical guide to help you and your adult children make the most of your relationship with a grandchild. For many grandparents, a grandchild offers a second chance to become the parent they didn’t have the time or the energy to be when raising their own children. Being a grandparent, family relationships expert Jane Isay argues, is the opportunity to turn missed opportunities into delight. Drawing on her personal experience, dozens of interviews, and the latest findings in psychology, Isay shows how a grandparent can use his or her unique perspective and experience to create a deep and lasting bond that will echo throughout a grandchild’s life. She explores the realities of today’s multigenerational families, identifying problems and offering solutions to enhance love, trust, and understanding between grandparents, parents, and grandchildren. She also offers a wealth of practical advice, from when to get involved, when to stay away, and how to foster a strong relationship when you’re separated by long distance. Unconditional Love advocates for honest conversation, thinking in the long run and healing breaches in order to be together, understanding that most of us try to do our best and need to be forgiven if we fail. Isay argues that secrets and surprises may tilt the boat but won’t necessarily sink it and that grandparents and their grown children are happier when they give each other the benefit of the doubt. Most importantly, she writes, the advent of grandchildren offers families the opportunity for healing and redemption—if we seize the moment. In lovely prose and through delightful stories, Isay shows us how we can. A great gift for grandparents-to-be and a wonderful resource for all, Unconditional Love is a beautiful and psychologically astute look at what it means to be an engaged grandparent.
