Book excerpt: 'Carmen won't last more than a couple of days.' Mason spat out a chunk of ice and surveyed the poor animal ruefully, then put her foot in his mouth and proceeded to bite out the ice which clustered cruelly between the toes. 'I never saw a dog with a highfalutin' name that ever was worth a rap, ' he said, as he concluded his task and shoved her aside. 'They just fade away and die under the responsibility. Did ye ever see one go wrong with a sensible name like Cassiar, Siwash, or Husky? No, sir! Take a look at Shookum here, he's-' Snap! The lean brute flashed up, the white teeth just missing Mason's throat. 'Ye will, will ye?' A shrewd clout behind the ear with the butt of the dog whip stretched the animal in the snow, quivering softly, a yellow slaver dripping from its fangs.

Book excerpt: Although Jack London (1876-1916) wrote on a great variety of subjects, he gained his first and most lasting fame as the author of tales of the Klondike gold rush.At the age of twenty-one London himself had trekked to the Yukon in hope of easy riches. What he found instead was a wealth of extraordinary experience, which he turned to account in his first collection of stories, The Son of the Wolf: Tales of the Far North (1900).The book centres on the exploits of Malemute Kid, who dispenses crude but unerring justice through his canny understanding of the minds and hearts of the people of this raw frontier territory. They act out their dramas of life and death in mining camps and on the Long Trail, against the backdrop ofthe frozen Northland. The stories tell of gambles won and lost, of endurance and sacrifice, and often turn on the unsuspected qualities of exceptional women and the complex relations between the white adventurers and the native tribes. This new edition, which includes the whole of London's first book and many of the best Northland tales from his later collections, makes available fresh perspectives on the work of this enduringly rewarding writer.

Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-The Son of the Wolf by Jack London. On July 25, 1897, Jack London, a young man of twenty-one of humble origin who made a living from clandestine oyster fishing in San Francisco Bay, decided to try his luck and embarked on the Umatilla steamer heading for the Valley of the Klondike, in distant Alaska, seduced by the news brought by some adventurers about the appearance of streaks of gold in such an inhospitable place. As winter sets in, London and the two friends who accompany him camp out in an abandoned cabin by the mouth of the Stewart River. In these lands (parallel 68, north latitude) living conditions are terribly harsh. The "white silence" is impressive, the freezing temperatures and total solitude: "Nature uses many tricks to convince man of its insignificance -the incessant flow of the tides, the fury of the storm, the trembling of the earthquake, the long redouble of the celestial artillery-, but the most terrible, the most incredible of all, is the passive phase of White Silence ... traveler, the only speck of life that traverses the ghostly wastelands of a dead world, trembles at his own audacity and perceives that his is a life of insects, nothing more he would write on his return to California a year later. The "son of the wolf"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jack London (1876-1916), was an American author and a pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction. He was one of the first Americans to make a lucrative career exclusively from writing. London was self-educated. He taught himself in the public library, mainly just by reading books. In 1898, he began struggling seriously to break into print, a struggle memorably described in his novel, Martin Eden (1909). Jack London was fortunate in the timing of his writing career. He started just as new printing technologies enabled lower-cost production of magazines. This resulted in a boom in popular magazines aimed at a wide public, and a strong market for short fiction. In 1900, he made $2,500 in writing, the equivalent of about $75,000 today. His career was well under way. Among his famous works are: Children of the Frost (1902), The Call of the Wild (1903), The Sea Wolf (1904), The Game (1905), White Fang (1906), The Road (1907), Before Adam (1907), Adventure (1911), and The Scarlet Plague (1912).

Book excerpt: "The Son Of The Wolf" is a collection of short stories, all with a common subject - the northern part of the American continent, the pursuit of gold during the rush in Yukon, and mainly the dealings between the locals (Native Americans) and the European settlers.Though the stories are different, they have much in common, and the mostly the same characters appear throughout them. Jack London gained a lot of fame by writing about the Klondike gold rush, and rightly so. London certainly has a very good insight into the minds of the men and women that occupy the raw, unforgiving North. The stories tell of endurance, hardships and strife but also about true friendship, brave men and virtuous women.Reading so many stories about the North makes me a little cold though, so I think I'll move to warmer places now :-)
