Book Synopsis Horror at the Drive-In by : Gary D. Rhodes
Download or read book Horror at the Drive-In written by Gary D. Rhodes and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drive-in movie theaters and the horror films shown at them during the 1950s, 60s, and early 70s may be somewhat outdated, but they continue to enthrall movie buffs today. More than just fodder for the satirical cannons of Joe Bob Briggs and Mystery Science Theatre 3000, they appeal to knowledgeable fans and film scholars who understand their influence on American popular culture. This book is a collection of eighteen essays by various scholars on the classic drive-in horror film experience. Those in Section One emphasize the roles of the drive-in theater in the United States--and its cultural cousin, Australia. Section Two examines how horror operated at the drive-in, the rhetoric used in coming attraction trailers, horror film premieres at drive-ins, double features, and the preproduction, production, and marketing of Last House on the Left. Section Three addresses the effects of the Vietnam War and counter-culture on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and the Cold War on Cat Women of the Moon. Section Four explores gender issues and sexuality, two of the most common and most important subjects of horror film analysis. Section Five covers drive-in culture via Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte, 2000 Maniacs, and the films of Mario Bava. Section Six investigates a variety of issues, such as the drive-in horror film's embrace of DNA, the use of cinematic form to create a non-Hollywood look in Wizard of Gore, and the many different prints and running times of I Drink Your Blood.
Book Synopsis The Assimilation Experience of Five American White Ethnic Novelists of the Twentieth Century by : Betty Ann Burch
Download or read book The Assimilation Experience of Five American White Ethnic Novelists of the Twentieth Century written by Betty Ann Burch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title, originally published in 1990, is a contribution to the social and literary history of ethnic groups in America. Its sources are the writings – chiefly novels – of five authors of Eastern and Southern European descent, chosen because they depict the acculturation of their people, the meeting of their own ethnic group and American society. From their marginal stance, they expressed in fiction what they had observed and experienced, and they wrote symbolically of their journey to a choice of belonging to one group or the other. This title will be of interest to students of literature, history, and sociology.

Book Synopsis Stories That Bind by : Madhavi Murty
Download or read book Stories That Bind written by Madhavi Murty and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-13 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories that Bind: Political Economy and Culture in New India examines the assertion of authoritarian nationalism and neoliberalism; both backed by the authority of the state and argues that contemporary India should be understood as the intersection of the two. More importantly, the book reveals, through its focus on India and its complex media landscape that this intersection has a narrative form, which author, Madhavi Murty labels spectacular realism. The book shows that the intersection of neoliberalism with authoritarian nationalism is strengthened by the circulation of stories about “emergence,” “renewal,” “development,” and “mobility” of the nation and its people. It studies stories told through film, journalism, and popular non-fiction along with the stories narrated by political and corporate leaders to argue that Hindu nationalism and neoliberalism are conjoined in popular culture and that consent for this political economic project is crucially won in the domain of popular culture. Moving between mediascapes to create an archive of popular culture, Murty advances our understanding of political economy through material that is often seen as inconsequential, namely the popular cultural story. These stories stoke our desires (e.g. for wealth), scaffold our instincts (e.g. for a strong leadership) and shape our values.
