Book excerpt: Don Mario Mazzoleni uses his theological training to examine Sai Baba's miracles and teachings. His doubts dissolve as he learns how Sai Baba's teachings mirror those of his divine master, Jesus Christ. When the Church demands that Don Mario recant for saying that God is alive or be excommunicated, the author said, "Institutions do not accompany anyone beyond the grave, the only reality that one can present to God is one's conscience. The Lord who examines our hearts is the Judge!". Don Mario Mazzoleni was excommunicated Sept. 24, 1992.

Book excerpt: A provocative new biography probes deeply into the storied life of Father Ted Hesburgh, the well-loved but often controversial president of Notre Dame University. Considered for many decades to be the most influential priest in America, Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, played what many consider pivotal roles in higher education, the Catholic Church, and national and international affairs. American Priest examines his life and his many and varied engagements—from the university he led for thirty-five years to his associations with the Vatican and the White House—and evaluates the extent and importance of his legacy. Author and Notre Dame priest-professor Wilson D. Miscamble tracks how Hesburgh transformed Catholic higher education in the postwar era and explores how he became a much-celebrated voice in America at large. Yet, beyond the hagiography that often surrounds Hesburgh’s legacy lies another more complex and challenging story. What exactly were his contributions to higher learning; what was his involvement in the civil rights movement; and what was the nature of his role as advisor to popes and presidents? Understanding Hesburgh’s life and work illuminates the journey that the Catholic Church traversed over the second half of the twentieth century. Exploring and evaluating Hesburgh’s importance, then, contributes not only to the colorful history of Notre Dame but also to comprehending the American Catholic experience. Praise for American Priest “An excellent, engaging biography . . . [Miscamble] deftly captures the ‘whole Hesburgh’ in a fair and thorough portrait.” —Catholic Philly “Excellent . . . the story that Father Miscamble tells is an all-American story—the rise of a Catholic of relatively modest background, close to his immigrant roots, to a place of prominence among the nation’s elite.” —Public Discourse

Book excerpt: (Spring 2010) Local parents warned about priests and nuns who gang rape and prostitute kids, tweens & teens in directory of clergy perps & pervs in your neighborhood. i missed me after the terror, during the years of unbearable sorrow: trafficking the holy Spirit includes oral journalism of adults raped as kids and a parental directory of priests and nuns who gang rape and prostitute kids, tweens and teens. Book asks Angela Merkel, Michele Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Alessandra Mussolini and Oprah Winfrey to help remove state, federal, civil and criminal statutes of limitation for sexual assault of kids, tweens and teens. Author says, “To protect families we must remove civil, criminal, state & federal statutes of limitation for sexual assault of children by showing parents and legislators cliches of ‘child abuse’ mask violent serial sexual assault and child, tween and teen suicide. The book documents only a few U.S. priests and nuns rape children under 12, serially rape children under 11, gang rape children under 10, sodomize kids under 9, give kids AIDS, get 11 year olds pregnant, abort children and teenagers, ritually abuse kids, sexually assault kids, torture kids, prostitute and murder kids, and abandon their illegitimate children borne of kids they raped ... all at the same 1.5% percentile as perps & pervs in society: of one million Catholic priests worldwide, only 15,000 sexually assault kids and teens; of ten million nuns, only 150,000 are perps & pervs. An appendix, Where are the Children of Table 34?, exposes a study of the ‘scientifically established’ orgasm rates of infants, toddlers, preschool children, kids, tweens and teens cited in proponing today's standards of sex education in the classroom for kids too young to be exposed to sex education and helped set statutes of limitation for rape of women (there had been none) and the shift from rapists being guilty to women having to prove they didn't want to be raped. It likely influenced setting statutes of limitation for clergy crimes of sexual assault of kids, tweens and teens. It has come to light ‘scientists using stopwatches’ to document ‘scientific studies’ – now used to justify premature sexual education of elementary school-aged kids, were conducted by child rapists and child murderers. That is one reason statutes should be removed, or extended to the life of the child, or ‘windowed’, since the ‘objective studies’ were done by perps and pervs. Another reason is, the psychiatric record establishes kids, tweens and teens sexually abused often commit suicide or repress the events for 20-30 years in order to not go crazy. They consequently make bad choices and live sad lives that never would have been, if they had not been sexually molested, assaulted, raped, serially raped, gang raped, prostituted and/or ritually abused. The church's time-honored tradition of "avoiding scandal" also backfires. For by the shielding of fallen clerics, Berry shows, the suffering of the abused is often compounded.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A meticulously researched inside look at child sexual abuse by clergy, this exhaustive, hard-hitting analysis weaves together interviews with abusive priests and church historical and administrative details to propose a new way of thinking about clerical sexual offenders. Linking the personal and the institutional, researcher and therapist Marie Keenan locates the problem of child sexual abuse not exclusively in individual pathology, but also within larger systemic factors, such as the very institution of priesthood itself, the Catholic take on sexuality, clerical culture, power relations, governance structures of the Catholic Church, the process of formation for priesthood and religious life, and the complex manner in which these factors coalesce to create serious institutional risks for boundary violations, including child sexual abuse. Keenan draws on the priests' own words not to excuse their horrific crimes, but to offer the first in-depth account of a tragic, multi-faceted phenomenon. What emerges is a troubling portrait of a Church in crisis and a series of recommendations that call for nothing less than a new ecclesiology and a new, more critical theology. Only through radical institutional reform, Keenan argues, can a more representative and accountable Church emerge. Child Sexual Abuse and the Catholic Church is a unique reference for scholars of the Church and therapists who work with both victims and offenders, as well as a forward-thinking blueprint for reform.
