Download or read book Remaking Madrid written by H. Stapell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-14 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remaking Madrid is the first full-length study of Madrid's transformation from the dreary home of the Franco dictatorship into a modern and vibrant city. It argues that this remarkable transformation in the 1980s helped secure Spain's fragile transition to democracy and that the transformation itself was primarily a product of "regionalism"-even though the capital is typically associated with "Spanishness" and with "the nation." The official project to distance Madrid from its dictatorial past included urban renewal and administrative reform; but, above all, it involved greater cultural participation, which led the revival of the capital's public festivals and the development of a modern cultural outpouring known as the movida madrileña. The book also explains the ultimate failure of regionalism in the capital by the end of the 1980s and asks whether or not Madrid's inclusive form of "civic" identity might have served as a model for the country as a whole.

Download or read book Joan Colom - Raval written by Joan Colom and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last years of the 1950s, Joan Colom spent every weekend exploring the "bas-fonds" of Barcelona, the Raval neighborhood known today as the Barrio Chino. Interest both in remaining discreet and in breaking with the aesthetic traditions of his elders caused him to begin working without aiming his camera; only while printing did he frame each image. On the street and in the darkroom, he saw himself as an impassioned witness to social theater and his work as a search for "images that touch me." His results were praised early on by personalities such as Ramon Massats and Josep Maria Casademont, who wrote in 1961, "with Joan Colom, we are entering a new phase of our history of photography." These classic images entwine the aesthetic of the 50s Modernist avant garde with the dark, pessimistic tradition of Franco's Spain; today, the image of the Barrio Chino is rooted in Colom's work.

Book Synopsis Painting and the Turn to Cultural Modernity in Spain by : Andrew Ginger
Download or read book Painting and the Turn to Cultural Modernity in Spain written by Andrew Ginger and published by Susquehanna University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural modernity has habitually been defined as a focus on the means of representation themselves, as opposed to art that imitates external reality or expresses its maker's inner life. The crucial moment is usually considered the emergence of Edouard Manet in mid-nineteenth-century France, and the features of French developments have been seen as defining terms in the theory of modernity. However, recent art and cultural history have often spoken of plural modernities, distinct from the pattern set in France. For the first time, this study in cultural history explores how Spanish culture took a radical turn toward the medium of representation itself in the 1850s and early 1860s. It argues that this happened in a way that is critically at odds with many fundamental theoretical suppositions about modernity.

Book Synopsis García Alix Photographs by : Alberto García-Alix
Download or read book García Alix Photographs written by Alberto García-Alix and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hundred and fifty or so pictures that make up this retrospective of the work of Alberto Garcia-Alix (Leon, 1956) illustrate one of the most outstanding careers om the past quarter-century of Spanish photography. His artistic experience unfolds in a sort of poetic narration: that of his own private journey into the depths of the night. His ongoing autobiographical endeavour has driven him to document the chronicle of his time through a set of portraits which often include his own. Three different approaches can be discerned in his vast production. The initial period (1975-1982), to which most of his 35mm. work belongs; the eighties, which evidence the mature style of a sophisticated composer of frames; and the recent nineties, which witness a shift towards an increasingly cold, bare and essential perspective. Projects that reflect the multifaceted and heterodox nature of an artist whose oeurve rooted in the most classical tradition of black and white photography.
