Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chiral materials have been studied in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Virginia for applications in areas like asymmetric catalysis, enantioselective fluorescent sensing, and optical/electrical materials. Optically active 1,1′-binaphthyl molecules are used to build novel chiral polymers, dendrimers, macrocycles, and acyclic molecules. 1,1′-Binaphthyl molecules are chosen because of their remarkably stable chiral configuration as well as their high asymmetric inductions in many processes. In this book, both the fundamental knowledge about the 1,1′-binaphthyl molecules and the synthesis of the structurally diverse 1,1′-binaphthyl-based materials are described. The applications of these materials in various fields are also discussed. This book will serve as a reference for graduate students as well as other professionals working in the related fields./a

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supramolecular chemistry deals with the organisation of molecules into defined assemblies using non-covalent interactions, including weaker and reversible interactions such as hydrogen bonds, and metal-ligand interactions. The aspect of stereochemistry within such chemical architectures, and in particular chirality, is of special interest as it impacts on considerations of molecular recognition, the development of functional materials, the vexed question of homochirality, nanoscale effects of interactions at interfaces, biocatalysis and enzymatic catalysis, and applications in organic synthesis. Chirality in Supramolecular Assemblies addresses many of these aspects, presenting a broad overview of this important and rapidly developing interdisciplinary field. Topics covered include: Origins of molecular and topological chirality Homochirogenesis Chirality in crystallinity Host-guest behavior Chiral influences in functional materials Chirality in network solids and coordination solids Aspects of chirality at interfaces Chirality in organic assemblies Chirality related to biocatalysis and enzymes in organic synthesis. This book is a valuable reference for researchers in the molecular sciences, materials science and biological science working with chiral supramolecular systems. It provides summaries and special insights by acknowledged international experts in the various fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first four volumes of the series on 'Charged and Reactive Polymers' have been devoted to polymers in solution (Voh. I and II) or in gel and membrane forms (Vols. III and IV). In correlation with charges, other physical or chemical properties of macro molecules have been considered. Understanding of charge and hydrophobic effects is equally important for synthetic and biopolymers or their systems. Optically Active Polymers are related to problems of the same class, since optical activity is an inherent property of both natural macromolecules as well as a great variety of polymers synthesized in the Jast twenty years. Optical activity is a physical spectral property of chiral matter caused by asymmetrical configurations, conformations and structures which have no plane and no center of symmetry and consequently have two mirror image enantiomeric forms of inverse optical rotation. The racemic mixture of chiral enantiomers is optically inactive. The most common form of optical activity was first measured at a constant wavelength by the angle of rotation of linearly polarized light. More recently the measurements have been extended to the entire range of visible and attainable ultraviolet regions where electronic transitions are observed, giving rise to the ORD technique (Optical Rotatory Dispersion). The Cotton effects appear in the region of optically active absorption bands; outside of these bands the plain curve spectrum is also dependent on all the electronic transitions of the chromophores.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chirality in Transition Metal Chemistry is an essential introduction to this increasingly important field for students and researchers in inorganic chemistry. Emphasising applications and real-world examples, the book begins with an overview of chirality, with a discussion of absolute configurations and system descriptors, physical properties of enantiomers, and principles of resolution and preparation of enantiomers. The subsequent chapters deal with the the specifics of chirality as it applies to transition metals. Some reviews of Chirality in Transition Metal Chemistry "...useful to students taking an advanced undergraduate course and particularly to postgraduates and academics undertaking research in the areas of chiral inorganic supramolecular complexes and materials." Chemistry World, August 2009 "... the book offers an extremely exciting new addition to the study of inorganic chemistry, and should be compulsory reading for students entering their final year of undergraduate studies or starting a Ph.D. in structural inorganic chemistry." Applied Organometallic Chemistry Volume 23, Issue 5, May 2009 "... In conclusion the book gives a wonderful overview of the topic. It is helpful for anyone entering the field through systematic and detailed introduction of basic information. It was time to publish a new and topical text book covering the important aspect of coordination chemistry. It builds bridges between Inorganic, organic and supramolecular chemistry. I can recommend the book to everybody who is interested in the chemistry of chiral coordination compounds." Angew. chem. Volume 48, Issue, April 2009 About the Series Chirality in Transition Metal Chemistry is the latest addition to the Wiley Inorganic Chemistry Advanced Textbook series. This series reflects the pivotal role of modern inorganic and physical chemistry in a whole range of emerging areas such as materials chemistry, green chemistry and bioinorganic chemistry, as well as providing a solid grounding in established areas such as solid state chemistry, coordination chemistry, main group chemistry and physical inorganic chemistry.
