Download or read book 103 Simple Poems From One Simple Person written by Mayne Leitzer and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-11-30 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simple poems says it all. One of the nicest things about this book is that any literate individual can understand these poems and relate to many of them. As you read through this book I hope it makes you smile a little smile and cry a tear or two. I hope with each verse you picture the events and feel the emotion. If this occurs the book will be a success. If you are having some tough times or just a bad day and you think of one of these poems and it helps you get over the hump then this book has accomplished everything that I believed it could. Sit back, relax, and read. The only power greater than reading is the power of writing something worthy of reading. I hope that one of these poems will remain in your memory for a lifetime and that you enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing it. Thank you Mayne Leitzer

Book Synopsis The Circulation of Poetry in Manuscript in Early Modern England by : Arthur F. Marotti
Download or read book The Circulation of Poetry in Manuscript in Early Modern England written by Arthur F. Marotti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-26 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the transmission and compilation of poetic texts through manuscripts from the late-Elizabethan era through the mid-seventeenth century, paying attention to the distinctive material, social, and literary features of these documents. The study has two main focuses: the first, the particular social environments in which texts were compiled and, second, the presence within this system of a large body of (usually anonymous) rare or unique poems. Manuscripts from aristocratic, academic, and urban professional environments are examined in separate chapters that highlight particular collections. Two chapters consider the social networking within the university and London that facilitated the transmission within these environments and between them. Although the topic is addressed throughout the study, the place of rare or unique poems in manuscript collections is at the center of the final three chapters. The book as a whole argues that scholars need to pay more attention to the social life of texts in the period and to little-known or unknown rare or unique poems that represent a field of writing broader than that defined in a literary history based mainly on the products of print culture.
Book Synopsis Origins of the Dream by : W. Jason Miller
Download or read book Origins of the Dream written by W. Jason Miller and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, some scholars have privately suspected that King’s “dream” was connected to Langston Hughes’s poetry. Drawing on archival materials, including notes, correspondence, and marginalia, W. Jason Miller provides a completely original and compelling argument that Hughes’s influence on King’s rhetoric was, in fact, evident in more than just the one famous speech. King’s staff had been wiretapped by J. Edgar Hoover and suffered accusations of communist influence, so quoting or naming the leader of the Harlem Renaissance—who had his own reputation as a communist—would only have intensified the threats against the civil rights activist. Thus, the link was purposefully veiled through careful allusions in King’s orations. In Origins of the Dream, Miller lifts that veil and shows how Hughes’s revolutionary poetry became a measurable inflection in King’s voice. He contends that by employing Hughes’s metaphors in his speeches, King negotiated a political climate that sought to silence the poet’s subversive voice. By separating Hughes’s identity from his poems, King helped the nation unconsciously embrace the incendiary ideas behind his poetry.
Download or read book Dangerous Food written by Peter D. Gooch and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognizing the social meaning of food and meals in Greco-Roman culture and, in particular, the social meaning of idol-food, is an integral part of understanding the impact of Paul’s instructions to the Christian community at Corinth regarding the consumption of idol-food. Shared meals were a central feature of social intercourse in Greco-Roman culture. Meals and food were markers of social status, and participation at meals was the main means of establishing and maintaining social relations. Participation in public rites (and sharing the meals which ensued) was a requirement of holding public office. The social consequences of refusing to eat idol-food would be extreme. Christians might not attend weddings, funerals, celebrations in honour of birthdays, or even formal banquets without encountering idol-food. In this extended reading of 1 Corinthians 8:1-11:1, Paul’s response to the Corinthian Christians’ query concerning food offered to idols, Gooch uses a social-historical approach, combining historical methods of source, literary and redaction criticism, and newer applications of anthropological and sociological methods to determine what idol-food was, and what it meant in that place at that time to eat or avoid it. In opposition to a well-entrenched scholarly consensus, Gooch claims that although Paul had abandoned purity rules concerning food, he would not abandon Judaism’s cultural and religious understanding concerning idol-food. On the basis of his reconstruction of Paul’s letter in which he urged the Corinthian Christians to avoid any food infected by non-Christian rites, Gooch argues that the Corinthians rejected Paul’s instructions to avoid facing significant social liabilities.
