Book Synopsis Luke 6:40 and the Theme of Likeness Education in the New Testament by : Thomas W. Hudgins
Download or read book Luke 6:40 and the Theme of Likeness Education in the New Testament written by Thomas W. Hudgins and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-01-07 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does Jesus mean when he says, "A disciple is not above his teacher, but each disciple, after being fully trained, will be like his teacher" (Luke 6:40)? This verse has been quoted, cited, and referenced in vast amounts of Christian education and discipleship literature. Nevertheless, the verse is nearly untouched in exegetical discussions with the exception of source-critical analyses. From this verse arises an undeveloped theme in the Gospel of Luke and the New Testament--the theme of likeness education. Using content analysis methodology, Luke 6:40--one of the keystone passages in Christian education literature--serves as the starting point for mining out the theme of likeness education in the New Testament. This study consists of three concentric areas of investigation: (1) Luke 6:40 and its immediate context, (2) Luke-Acts, and (3) the New Testament corpus.
Book Synopsis Jesus the Purifier by : Craig L. Blomberg
Download or read book Jesus the Purifier written by Craig L. Blomberg and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third quest for the historical Jesus has reached an impasse. But a fourth quest is underway--one that draws from a heretofore largely neglected source: John's Gospel. In this book, renowned New Testament scholar Craig Blomberg advances the idea that John is a viable and valuable source for studying the historical Jesus. The data from John should be integrated with that of the Synoptics, which will yield additional insights into Jesus's emphases and ministry. Blomberg begins by reviewing the first three quests, reassessing both their contributions and their shortcomings. He then discusses the emerging consensus regarding demonstrably historical portions of John, which are more numerous than usually assumed. Peeling back the layers, we discover in Jesus's ministry an emphasis on purity and purification. The Synoptics corroborate this discovery, specifically in Jesus's meals with sinners. Blomberg then explores the practical and contemporary applications of Jesus the purifier, including the "contagious holiness" that Jesus's followers can spread to others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviewing what we now know about actual synagogues in the land of Israel and their public role in Jewish life and culture, Jordan J. Ryan shows that Gospel narratives placed in synagogues accurately reflect the ancient synagogue setting. He argues for the historical plausibility of the setting of these narratives and suggests that synagogue research must be a starting point for their interpretation. He further argues that Jesus‘s efforts at the restoration of Israel were intentionally aimed at the synagogue as an institution of public and political life.
