Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in the early 1830s, American girls and women began to hold Old English May Day festivals, complete with maypole dances, the crowning of a May Queen, and romantic plays and pageants. These festivals accelerated in popularity after 1900 at colleges and universities across the country. An important part of the traditional college experience for many women, the celebrations played a surprisingly influential role in the Progressive reform movement. This thorough history examines the creation and development of the traditional American May Day festival. It also provides an overview of May Day celebrations at 80 specific college and universities, eight of which continue to celebrate the festival annually.

Book Synopsis Everybody In, Nobody Out by : Ken Fischer
Download or read book Everybody In, Nobody Out written by Ken Fischer and published by University of MICHIGAN REGIONAL. This book was released on 2020-08-21 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Housed on the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the University Musical Society is one of the oldest performing arts presenters in the country. A past recipient of the National Medal of Arts, the nation’s highest public artistic honor, UMS connects audiences with wide-ranging performances in music, dance, and theater each season.Between 1987 and 2017, UMS was led by Ken Fischer, who over three decades pursued an ambitious campaign to expand and diversify the organization’s programming and audiences—initiatives inspired by Fischer’s overarching philosophy toward promoting the arts, “Everybody In, Nobody Out.” The approach not only deepened UMS’s engagement with the university and southeast Michigan communities, it led to exemplary partnerships with distinguished artists across the world. Under Fischer’s leadership, UMS hosted numerous breakthrough performances, including the Vienna Philharmonic’s final tour with Leonard Bernstein, appearances by then relatively unknown opera singer Cecilia Bartoli, a multiyear partnership with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and artists as diverse as Yo-Yo Ma, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Elizabeth Streb, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Though peppered with colorful anecdotes of how these successes came to be, this book is neither a history of UMS nor a memoir of Fischer’s significant accomplishments with the organization. Rather it is a reflection on the power of the performing arts to engage and enrich communities—not by handing down cultural enrichment from on high, but by meeting communities where they live and helping them preserve cultural heritage, incubate talent, and find ways to make community voices heard.

This book was released on 1977 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After years of neglect, composer Charles Ives (1874-1954) has been proclaimed as "the father of nearly everything American in American music." The lack of recognition that Ives suffered in his own lifetime - for example, he never heard most of his major pieces played - has been obliterated by all-Ives concerts, radio broadcast series, documentary films, books, and the establishment of Ives societies here and abroad. All these things attest to Ives's increasing stature since the fifties and give certain evidence that he has finally "arrived." Public acclaim for Ives's talents reached its zenith in the Charles Ives Centennial Festival-Conference, the first international congress ever dedicated to an American composer. This book is the record of the non-performance part of the festival-conference. It contains essays on Ives and American culture, chapters on conducting, performing, and editing Ives, comments from foreign scholars and composers, and a long section on Ives and present day musical thought. The papers and panels examine minute details of Ives's music and life in an attempt to explain the current "Ives phenomenon." The contributors are among the most important names in their respective fields.
