In the 19th century, LeRoy was known for Igham University, one of the first colleges for women and the first to grant a four-year degree. First settled in 1797, LeRoy has produced patent medicines, salt, limestone, dynamite, plows, agricultural commodities, stoves, organs, insulators, and a myriad of other products. Located on the eastern edge of Genesee County and 30 miles southwest of Rochester, LeRoy originally depended on water power from the Oatka Creek and was soon serviced by several railroads. It was also a station on the Underground Railroad.

Book excerpt: A gumbo of French, Spanish, and American influences, the architecture of New Orleans has always reflected the city's strong Catholic roots. Indeed, St. Louis Cathedral across from Jackson Square stands as perhaps the most widely recognized face of New Orleans. The cathedral, though, is just one of many stunning churches that beautifully reflect the city's long and diverse Catholic heritage. Splendors of Faith showcases thirteen of these historic churches of exceptional architectural and artistic beauty, revealing scenic treasures that lie mostly beyond the well-worn tourist paths. The earliest of the thirteen, St. Louis Cathedral, traces its origin to 1727. The most recent, Immaculate Conception, was built in 1930 but modeled after its mid-nineteenth-century predecessor. The eleven other churches are Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, Holy Name of Jesus, Mater Dolorosa, Our Lady of the Rosary, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Joseph, St. Mary's Assumption, St. Patrick, St. Peter Claver, and St. Stephen. In image and word, photographer Frank J. Methe and historian Charles E. Nolan capture the splendor of these places of worship. Methe provides sumptuously detailed color photographs of the churches and their interior décor. Nolan offers enlightening commentary about each edifice, its congregation, and the rich variety of art forms assembled over the years: architecture, stained glass, statuary, mosaics, paintings, and more. New Orleans Catholics and their churches experienced dramatic change after Hurricane Katrina and the levee breaks. The buildings featured here, some of which suffered major damage in 2005, continue to serve as places of worship, bearing witness to a vibrant cultural component in one of the country's most beloved cities. Splendors of Faith takes readers inside these landmark churches and reveals their aesthetic and historical significance as never before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before independence from Mexico in 1836, the Catholic faith was the only religion settlers in Texas, known as Texians, could legally practice. To acquire land in Texas, then a part of Mexico known as Coahuila y Tejas, one had to be a member of the Roman Catholic Church or agree to convert to Catholicism. Although a few Protestant church buildings were erected before Texas's independence in 1836, most were erected after 1836 because of Mexico's strict laws prohibiting and often severe punishment for practicing any faith other than Catholicism. The few Protestant church buildings that were erected prior to Texas independence were usually erected along the margins of Texas in the more remote regions of North and East Texas, distancing themselves from Mexico's center of government in San Antonio. The first Protestant church established in Texas that has been in continuous service was organized by the Reverend Milton Estill in 1833 as the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Old Shiloh, a small community located about four miles north of Clarksville. In 1848, the Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Congregation joined with the Presbyterian congregation in Clarksville to become the First Presbyterian Church, Clarksville. The First Presbyterian Congregation in Clarksville is recognized as the oldest Protestant church in continuous service in the state of Texas. After Texians won their independence in 1836, religious congregations began to meet openly and to build houses of worship. Most of these early church buildings were poorly built and did not survive the ravages of time. Eventually, stronger buildings were erected. But even then, with open fireplaces and wood-burning stoves providing heat and candles or kerosene lanterns providing the primary source of light, church buildings were often destroyed by accidental fires. In addition, with time, congregations often outgrew their vintage church buildings or could no longer afford the high cost of maintaining the older, outdated buildings. As a result, congregations abandoned them to erect larger and often more elaborate edifices. Once abandoned, the old church buildings were razed or, if left standing, rapidly deteriorated. Over the past twelve years, my wife and I have visited and photographed almost one thousand historic churches in Texas. Photographing these historic church buildings and learning about the pioneers that often at great risk founded and maintained them has been a project of love. Visiting these historic churches and meeting the people that maintain them today has been inspirational.

Book excerpt: Once a thriving center of sugar production on the east bank of the Mississippi River, Reserve has matured into one of America's quintessential small towns. Settled by members of Louisiana's expanding German Coast, Reserve has grown from an agrarian economy to one of global industry, trade, and resource development. Born under the name Bonnet Carre and later raised as St. Peter's, after the church at the center of its life, the term Reserve was adopted from the name of the plantation that had essentially started it all. Nestled between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Reserve has offered its hospitality to weary travelers and visitors alike for 150 years. An integral part in the history of St. John the Baptist Parish, Reserve has retained its charm and warmth through a long-standing tradition of faith and family, where its sons and daughters may venture out onto the world stage but always call Reserve home. Strolling through Reserve today, one can enjoy a community steeped in German, French, and African roots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will fascinate the reader as the author shares his own true story since his childbirth in Egypt, his growth, passions, sufferings and hopes and that of many others he knew. The book brings to light the relational character of the cosmos and all life it contains, as a reflection of the Mystery of God who is Love. Based on the historical development of thought and science as well as recent research, the author argues that humanity is destined for the Second Coming of Christ, the Alpha and Omega. Based on the development of civilizations the book illustrates violence, vengeance, greed, passion, fear, security, collaboration, love, and success as examples from history of individuals as well as cultures. The premise of the book is that humans by nature are relational. Since early civilizations, collaboration and reciprocity between tribes led to trade and thus learning developed in many centers. But knowledge is not only intellectual. Knowledge is completed in the love of the other which is pervasive in human thought and relations. The conclusion proposes imitation of love, the love shown in the life and teachings of Christ, even if hard, in order to live eternal life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essence of Geneva lies in the city's distinctive hometown quality and relaxed atmosphere. Visitors sense a slower pace and tender ambience that flourished even before Geneva was platted on May 3, 1837. Geneva, Illinois presents a remarkable portrait of the community's earliest beginnings and present-day charms. Geneva offers the vintage flavor of an historic city as well as the contemporary feel of a modern community. In this collection you will find early portraits of education, when lessons were taught in the dining room of a local hotel, along with scenes that celebrate the lush riverbanks upon which residents and guests have enjoyed picnics for more than a hundred years. From the flowers picked at Wheeler Park to the moving pictures of the Optigraph, from the wooden ice cabinets of 1884 to the sidewalk cafes of today, Geneva has flourished.
