Some say "Americans racing motorcycles like they race horses!" Others say "the only simple and pure racing left in today's massively complicated world." The Complete Book of Flat Track Racing, when first published in 1978, was a celebration. This brand new edition sticks to the original concept but is completely reworked and re- illustrated, and continues that celebration today. Feel the dirt flying, the ground pounding vibration, and be exhausted by the massive excitement of being totally sideways in turn two aboard a Harley-Davidson XR 750! Welcome to the Thunder Dome!

Book excerpt: The First 100 Years tells the story from 1907 to 2007 of the First Baptist Church of Passtown and the African American Community of Hayti in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. The church members and residents tell their stories in words and pictures during the milestone 100th Anniversary of the First Baptist Church of Passtown in 2007. There are many historical Hayti communities throughout the United States. In this Hayti community, families migrating from the South found an oasis and have been neighbors and friends for over 100 years. Whether researching segregated schools in a northern state; or family members who migrated from the South to work in a steel town; or history contained in the books written by Hayti residents; you may find the answer inside, on the pages of this book. The surprise connections fell from the sky. What began as a small, local history of our church and community has yielded so much more historical texture. The years tell us much that the days never knew - Ralph Waldo Emerson Welcome to Hayti and the First Baptist Church of Passtown!

Compelling photographs of the motorcycle, or "bike" as enthusiasts call them, show the evolution of motorcycling from its dawn to the present day. Unique graphic spreads take the reader through time and travel by highlighting a single key motorcycle for each year in the past century, accompanied by engaging anecdotes about its original design, its intrepid riders, and its final fate. Highly readable and visually exciting, this book is an excellent resource for motorcycle fans and transportation buffs alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to World War I, auto racing featured expensive machines and teams financed by auto factories. The teams toured the country, and most of the races were held in large cities, so the vast majority of Americans never saw a race. All this changed after World War I, though, and in the 1920s and 1930s there were approximately 1,000 dirt tracks in the United States and Canada. The dirt tracks offered small-time racing--little prize money and minimal publicity--but people loved it. This pictorial history documents dirt track racing, with what are today called sprint cars, around the United States from 1919 to 1941. Information on dirt track racing in Canada during this time is also provided. Regionally divided chapters detail the drivers, tracks, and specific races of each area of the country. Some of the drivers went on to win fame and fortune while others faded into obscurity. Tracks included well known facilities as well as out-of-the-way sites few people had ever heard of. The cars ranged from state of the art machines to the more common home built specials based on Model T or Model A Ford parts. Taken together, the drivers, tracks, and races of this era were instrumental in making auto racing the popular sport it is today.

The Bob Hannah Story is the first book to explore the life of American motocross and Supercross racing’s first superstar. From the time he raced the Husquvarna he bought with “ones, fives, tens, change; all of my savings,” until his retirement at Unadilla in 1989, Bob Hannah won races and championships, spoke his mind, and signed almost every autograph-seeker’s program. Told as an oral history by Hannah himself and by those who know him best, this book is full of stories that could only have happened to a character as colorful as the Hurricane. The tale author Tom Madigan tells is the life of an American original, a boy who went from riding dirt bikes in the desert with his father to taking the motocross world by surprise. By the time Hannah retired in 1989, he had collected 70 AMA National wins, seven AMA National titles, a MX des Nations title, and legions of devoted fans. When inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999, he was second to none in both total and consecutive wins. Richly illustrated, this is the definitive biography of the Hurricane.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of one of the world’s most innovative, beloved, and famous motorcycle manufacturers on its 100th anniversary. In 1921, Giorgio Parodi founded Moto Guzzi with the mechanic Carlo Guzzi. The purpose of the company was to design innovative motorcycles in the Mandello del Lario headquarters on Lake Como, where the factory still stands today. Moto Guzzi bikes immediately stood out for their high performance and technical sophistication. Their greatness was proven by competition wins, and these sporting triumphs were accompanied by commercial success that made Moto Guzzi the most important motorcycle manufacturer in Italy. These victories did not happen by chance, but were the result of continuous innovation. The company soon decided to withdraw from competitions because of its “manifest superiority” and instead focused on production. It has since continued to churn out iconic innovations and models, like the California, which was chosen by the LAPD for their patrols. Moto Guzzi is no longer just a motorcycle but, like Harley-Davidson, it has become a style, a philosophy and a sign of belonging to the Guzzi tribe that unites movie stars like Ewan McGregor with acclaimed designers like Tom Dixon, musicians like Billy Joel, and astronauts such as Paolo Nespoli.

From the earliest days of single-speed, belt-driven machines delivering 5 bhp, to the highly developed projectiles of today offering a fearsome 200 bhp, race fans have thronged the roadside banks and watched in awe as the best racing motorcyclists in the world rode the fastest machines of their day around the twists, turns and climbs of the 374 mile Mountain Course, all in pursuit of a coveted Tourist Trophy. This new updated edition covering the 2007 - 2012 races, reveals the event's colourful history through the high-speed activities of great riders such as the Collier brothers, Geoff Duke, Mike Hailwood, Giacomo Agostini, Steve Hislop, Joey Dunlop, John McGuinness and many others. It also looks at the machines and mechanical developments and race organisation, plus the financial rewards and commercial interests; setting them all in the context of the triumphs and tragedies of a great sporting event that has seen average lap speeds rise from 40 mph to over 130 mph.
