This book was released on 2024-02-28 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Officially it doesn’t exist. On June 27, 1985, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials voted to decertify US 66 and to remove all its highway signs. And yet iconic Route 66 is more popular and more famous than any time in its nearly 100-year history. Tour companies based in New Zealand, Australia, Germany, the Czech Republic, and other countries specialize in Route 66 tours. There are Route 66 associations in Japan, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Czech Republic, and other countries that organize tours and events. Enthusiasts from throughout the world attended the European Route 66 Festival in Germany, and in 2018, in Zlin, Czechia. There is an infectious magic about a Route 66 adventure. Quirky attractions, time capsule motels trimmed in colorful neon, fascinating museums, and charming restaurants and diners, some owned by the same family since the 1920s, are part of the allure. But what really gives the road a vibrancy is the passionate people who preserve the road’s unique culture. I didn’t write 100 Things to Do on Route 66 Before You Die as a tour guide. It was written to enhance a Route 66 odyssey. From its inception it was envisioned as a companion to guides such as the popular EZ 66 Guide for Travelers written by the acclaimed artist Jerry McClanahan or the Route 66 Navigation app. The foundation for Jim Hinckley’s America is a passion for sharing America’s story, and for inspiring road trips by telling people where to go. And that is what this book is: 100 of my favorite places on Route 66 where the line between America’s past, present, and future is blurred, and where the best of Route 66 can be experienced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It started in the heartland and originally ended in Los Angeles (not, contrary to myth, at the ocean). It carried truckers crossing the country, Okies fleeing the Dust Bowl, vacationers seeking the sun. It was Americas Main Street, the Mother Road, the Will Rogers Highway, and, at its dangerous curves, Bloody 66. Get your kicks on Route 66 with this wonderfully illustrated tribute to the best-loved highway in this car-loving nation. Michael Witzel shares his expertise and wealth of personal, archive, collector, and contributing photographer images in these pages, offering a nostalgic tour of the charms and oddities of this road through American cultural history. Starting in Chicago and running to Santa Monica, this book highlights the sights along the highway with historic and current photos in then-and-now pairings, and includes Route 66 postcards, road signs, trinkets, maps, brochures, and advertisements. Here we see Route 66 as it was in its heyday and as it is now, the neon glamour of yesterday versus the ghost towns of today. Witzel and his wife, Gyvel Young-Witzel, recount the highways history, its role in popular culture, and its demise, as well as the individual stories of famous sights. Several profiles of those with close ties to the Mother Road, including the woman who played Ruthie Joad in the The Grapes of Wrath film, are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “[The] text and photos make this . . . more than a pretty coffee-table book, Route 66 aficionados will want to add this descriptive tome to their collections.” —Ruidoso News (New Mexico) Much more than a ribbon of crumbling asphalt, Route 66 is a cultural icon revered the world over for its nostalgic value—an east-west artery pointing America toward all the promise that the great West represented. But as stretches of Steinbeck’s “Mother Road” were bypassed and fell into disuse, so too did most of the bustling establishments that had sprouted up from Illinois to California to cater to weary travelers and hopeful vacationers alike. Motor courts, cafes, main streets, filling stations, and greasy spoons—all are represented in this second volume of Lost & Found images from photographer Russell Olsen. As with its predecessor, Route 66 Lost & Found (2004), this new installment presents dozens of locations along Route 66’s entire 2,297 miles, showing them both as in their heydays in period photographs and postcards and as they appear today. Each site is accompanied by a capsule history tracing the locale’s rise and fall (and sometimes rebirth), as well as an exclusive map pointing out its location along Route 66. “Author Russell Olson has unearthed old photos and postcards of various buildings, landmarks and towns which he carefully researches and then rediscovers and takes pictures of them as they are today.” —Auto Aficionado “I could barely put this down.” —Daily Express (UK) “A good read for fans of roadside architecture.” —Classic and Sports Car (UK)
