Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces students and other interested readers to the philosophy of religion—a vibrant and growing field of academic philosophy. Readers will be guided through an exploration of classic and contemporary arguments for and against theism. In addition to this crucial, but standard fare, this book looks to probe deeper into the nature and value (or dis-value) of religion itself. Philosophy of religion is becoming more diverse, both in terms of the religious traditions it examines, and the issues that it addresses. This book reflects that fact, engaging with religious traditions from Quakerism to Jainism. Questions and topics covered include: What is religion? What philosophical problems arise for the practices of prayer, worship, and meditation? How might multiple religions co-exist in peace? If there’s a God, would it be the sort of thing that language could describe? When and how might it be rational to wager that a particular religion is true? With a glossary of key terms and suggestions for further reading, Philosophy of Religion: The Basics is an ideal starting point for anyone seeking a lively and accessible foray into the study of religion or philosophy.

Book excerpt: This book is the result of several years of study of the Apostle Paul's ministry in the Acts of the Apostles, his epistles to the local churches of Asia Minor, Rome, individuals (Timothy, Titus, and Philemon) indeed to the Body of Christ as a whole. Unique words of the King James Bible examine 199 words chosen by the KJB translators that quite often differentiate the ministry of Paul, the principle doctrines of access to God, adoption, dispensation, justification by faith, immortality, etc.The reader will find that many of our English words originated with William Tyndale, the first to translate the Word of God into the English language from the original Hebrew and Greek, words such as immortal, readiness, and ungodliness within the scope of this work. The reader will learn that the KJB translators themselves brought new words into the English language that the previous translator and translations did not have, words such as addicted, fidelity, novice, and thirty other words. The reader will also discover that besides the prescribed previous Bibles,(the translators were to use Tyndale's, Coverdale's, Matthews, Great, Geneva and Bishop's), that they also used the Roman Catholic Rheims New Testament, as evidenced by words such as apprehend, emulation, and theatre, as well as nine others within the scope of this work. This work is designed to serve as a reference book for the student of the Bible, primarily as a theological source, and secondarily as a historical reference of how some words came into the fabric of the English language we speak today.

Book excerpt: Religious Architecture in Latium and Etruria, c. 900-500 BC presents the first comprehensive treatment of cult buildings in western central Italy from the Iron Age to the Archaic Period. By analysing the archaeological evidence for the form of early religious buildings and their role in ancient communities, it reconstructs a detailed history of early Latial and Etruscan religious architecture that brings together the buildings and the people who used them. The first part of the study examines the processes by which religious buildings changed from huts and shrines to monumental temples, and explores apparent differences between these processes in Latium and Etruria. The second part analyses the broader architectural, religious, and topographical contexts of the first Etrusco-Italic temples alongside possible rationales for their introduction. The result is a new and extensive account of when, where, and why monumental cult buildings became features of early central Italic society.

Book excerpt: These essays by leading historians and literary scholars investigate the role of religion in shaping political, social and literary forms, and their reciprocal role in shaping early modern religion, from the Reformation to the Civil Wars. Reflecting and rethinking the insights of new historicism and cultural studies, individual essays take up various aspects of the productive, if tense, relation between Tudor-Stuart Christianity and culture, and explore how religion informs some of the central texts of English Renaissance literature: the vernacular Bible, Foxe's Acts and Monuments, Hooker's Laws, Shakespeare's plays and sonnets, the poems of John Donne, Amelia Lanyer and John Milton. The collection demonstrates the centrality of religion to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England, and its influence on early modern constructions of gender, subjectivity and nationhood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative case for the inherently political nature of language In The Politics of Language, David Beaver and Jason Stanley present a radical new approach to the theory of meaning, offering an account of communication in which political and social identity, affect, and shared practices play as important a role as information. This new view of language, they argue, has dramatic consequences for free speech, democracy, and a range of other areas in which speech plays a central role. Drawing on a wealth of disciplines, The Politics of Language argues that the function of speech—whether in dialogue, larger group interactions, or mass communication—is to attune people to something, be it a shared reality, emotion, or identity. Reconceptualizing the central ideas of pragmatics and semantics, Beaver and Stanley apply their account to a range of phenomena that defy standard frameworks in linguistics and philosophy of language—from dog whistles and covert persuasion to echo chambers and genocidal speech. The authors use their framework to show that speech is inevitably political because all communication is imbued with the resonances of particular ideologies and their normative perspectives on reality. At a time when democracy is under attack, authoritarianism is on the rise, and diversity and equality are being demanded, The Politics of Language offers a powerful new vision of the language of politics, ideology, and protest.
