Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1 John: On Docetism and Resurrection (2016), the author elucidated the fundamental principles driving the modern order. The latter works according to a novel form of salvation, an ontology unto dissolution that the author recognizes as a new manifestation of the ancient heresy of docetism. The modern heresy turns on faith in the Christ-Idol, an idolatry hidden for centuries beneath the cover of Western Christianity. Its theological solution requires renewed engagement with the Trinitarian love, understanding that love as a function of mutual life-giving between the divine persons. The revised and extended version of 1 John assumes the undoing of Western society under the docetic ethos, seeking theological foundations for the society that might follow. It details the meaning of various aspects of docetic (modern) society through a Johannine lens, explaining these aspects as forms of oppression. The author counters these through the Eastern Orthodox focus on the inner life over the external one, the spiritual world over the physical, and the proper appreciation of hierarchy as opposed to docetic equality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where did the Bible come from? How do we know the right books are in the Bible? Does the Bible contain errors? What are the oldest copies we have of the Bible? How do we know that the Bible hasn't been changed over the years? Why are there so many translations of the Bible, and which one should I use? These are just some of the important questions about the Bible that are discussed in this book. Understanding basic facts about the origin of the Bible is essential for every Christian, but it can also be confusing and difficult. Here, two well-known scholars, authors of a more technical book, A General Introduction to the Bible, explain simply and clearly these basic facts. Inspiration, the biblical canon, major manuscripts, textual criticism, early translations, and modern versions are some of the major topics discussed. Careful explanations of important points are given throughout, as the entire field of biblical introduction is covered. Completely updated and revised edition of the 1974 work (more than 78,000 copies sold). Helpful charts have been added, along with an index of subjects, persons, and Scripture. This book is ideally suited for Bible students, pastors, and professors. While writing for readers without previous training, the authors do not gloss over difficult and complex issues when they arise. The nature of inspiration, the extent of the canon, and the usefulness of modern versions are all clearly discussed. The authors write: "The chain of communication from God to us is strong. It has several solid links: inspiration, collection, transmission, and translations. The strength of these links provide the contemporary Christian with the moral certitude that the Spirit-inspired original text of Scripture has been providentially preserved by God so that for all practical purposes the Bible in our hands is the infallible and inerrant word of God."

Are only the few elect? Rather than typically beginning with the preconceptions of systematic theologies, Dr. William Klein takes up this question by searching for a biblical theology of election. He surveys the OT contexts of God's choosing individuals--prophets, priests, kings--to serve divine purposes, and considers God's election of the nation of Israel as his special people. This OT study proposes that God's election is both individual and corporate, but not always determinative. Individuals entered the people of God by birth, but not all the people found salvation. Faith in Yahweh was required. This book traces these elective understandings through the intertestamental literature, identifying continuities and shifts. The bulk of the study, and the heart of the argument, focus on the New Testament. Klein identifies concepts of election, and relationships between writers in the gospels, the Lucan material, Paul's writings, and the rest. The new covenant, God choosing the church in Christ, emphasizes election as corporate, while the individual election of Jesus' disciples and of Paul raises the question whether such chosenness is necessarily salvific. In closing, Klein discusses the most engaging and divisive questions around God's election, and offers a real challenge to today's church.

In this revised and expanded edition, Dan Story goes even further. With the latest apologetic evidence and tactics, he not only answers those age-old questions but also deals with new challenges to Christianity that have emerged over the last two decades, including the ubiquitous presence of social media. He also responds head-on to the new breed of vocal, aggressive, man-on-the-street atheists. Book excerpt: Understanding the Dreams You Dream: Biblical Keys for Hearing God’s Voice in the Night not only provides insight into your dreams and life, but also includes a comprehensive dictionary of dream symbols! You will be guided through the complex world of dreams by a minister with decades of experience receiving, understanding, and interpreting dreams of his own and for others. I have received many helpful messages from God through dreams. In addition to being helped through my own dreams, I have seen many other people obtain help and comfort by using their dreams as an aid to healing in pastoral counseling. –Ira Milligan Through Scripture-based meditation, much can be understood about your dreams, but many Christians don’t know how to meditate. This problem is addressed in three different ways: • Specific, detailed directions are given on how and upon what to meditate. • Personal examples of dreams from the author’s own experiences. • Practical dictionary of symbol definitions is included. This book presents both normal and not-so-normal dream situations. You will learn that to apply only one type of dream interpretation to all dreams is restricting each symbol to only one possible definition, which is incorrect. And you will learn how to tell the difference between a dream from God—and those from evil sources.

Book excerpt: A rigorously researched biography of the founder of modern magick, as well as a study of the occult, sexuality, Eastern religion, and more The name “Aleister Crowley” instantly conjures visions of diabolic ceremonies and orgiastic indulgences—and while the sardonic Crowley would perhaps be the last to challenge such a view, he was also much more than “the Beast,” as this authoritative biography shows. Perdurabo—entitled after the magical name Crowley chose when inducted into the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn—traces Crowley’s remarkable journey from his birth as the only son of a wealthy lay preacher to his death in a boarding house as the world’s foremost authority on magick. Along the way, he rebels against his conservative religious upbringing; befriends famous artists, writers, and philosophers (and becomes a poet himself); is attacked for his practice of “the black arts”; and teaches that science and magick can work together. While seeking to spread his infamous philosophy of, “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law,” Crowley becomes one of the most notorious figures of his day. Based on Richard Kaczynski’s twenty years of research, and including previously unpublished biographical details, Perdurabo paints a memorable portrait of the man who inspired the counterculture and influenced generations of artists, punks, wiccans, and other denizens of the demimonde.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other book of the New Testament has attracted as much attention from commentators as the Fourth Gospel. It has stirred minds, hearts, and imaginations from Christianity's earliest days. In The Gospel of John, Francis Moloney unfolds the identifiable point of view" of this unique Gospel narrative and offers readers, heirs to its rich and widely varied interpretative traditions, relevance for their lives today. The Gospel of John's significance for Christianity has been obvious from the time of Irenaeus. It was also fundamental in the emergence of Christian theology, especially in the trinitarian and christological debates that produced the great ecumenical Councils, from Nicaea to Chalcedon. What sets this commentary on the Fourth Gospel apart from others is Moloney's particular attention to the narrative design of the Gospel story. He traces the impact the Johannine form of the Jesus story has made on readers and explicates the way in which the author has told the story of Jesus. Through this he demonstrates how the Gospel story articulates a coherent theology, christology, and ecclesiology. "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1960s was famously the decade of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll. It was also a decade of revolution and counter-revolution, of the Cuban missile crisis, of the American intervention in Vietnam, of economic booms and the beginning of consumerism (and the rebellion against it). In Hollywood, the genres which had held audiences captive in the 1940s and 50s - musicals, Westerns, melodramas - were losing their appeal and their great practitioners were approaching retirement. The scene was therefore set for new cinemas to emerge to attract the young, the discriminating, the politically conscious and the sexually emancipated. Making Waves, Revised and Expanded is a sharp, focused, and brilliant survey of the innovative filmmaking of the 1960s, placing it in its political, economic, cultural and aesthetic context - capturing the distinctiveness of a decade which was great for the cinema and for the world at large. Geoffrey Nowell-Smith pays particular attention to a handful of the most remarkable talents (Godard, Antonioni, Oshima) that emerged during the period and helped to make it so special. Nowell-Smith updates his classic text with a focus on 1960s Japan and the burgeoning New York scene.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Clergy Burnout: Surviving in Turbulent Times, Revised and Expanded, Fred Lehr explores the nature and practice of clergy codependence. In short, insightful, and easily accessible chapters filled with many examples and stories from his own life and the lives of those he has counseled, Lehr identifies the typical forms codependence takes in the life and ministry of clergy. These forms include the chief enabler, who keeps things functioning; the scapegoat, on whom everything that goes wrong is blamed; the hero, the example, the pure and righteous one; the lost child, whom no one really knows or cares about; the rescuer, who saves the day, fixes the problem, makes everything all right again; and the mascot, the cheerleader, the one who offers comic relief, brings down the tension level after a heated discussion. With a new preface, Lehr places the current challenges of ministry in the context of broader cultural shifts. The book concludes with a new chapter, Lehr's hard-won and carefully distilled words of wisdom for those who serve in turbulent times.
